Hot Pearly Gates ?

Basically a PG but with an output to give an amp a good push, say fullshred level, any mods or existing models ?

Thanks.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Didn't there use to be a Pearly Gates+ model? I would look into that.

Yes, it was in the Lonestar Strats. It has an A5 magnet and a few thousand more turns of wire. I think the A5 magnet sort of changes the tone, though.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

i dont think it had that much extra wire, maybe a few hundred extra turns. a typical paf type bobbin might have 5000 turns of wire, adding 250 more would be noticable, adding 500 would change things are fair amount. there is a custom shop version of the pearly gates that is overwound compared to the production verion that ive heard is fatter and has a little more output.

the pg+ doesnt sound much like a pg to me but thats more to do with the a5 as dave mentioned

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Yeah, the PG+ doesn't kick an amp much harder than a standard PGb. The closest I've found to a hot PG, in general feel, if not exactly the tone, was the Screamin' Demon, and, to a certain extent, the S Deco V. They both have a much tighter bottom than a PGb, but they also have some of the upper midrange push and top end sizzle that a PGb does.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I have several PGs and also PG+ modded with a A2. The stock PG+ was earbleeding brite with a 500k volume, with a 250k volume not much louder nor different from stock PG. The PG+ is not worth the effort imo.
If you search the bay for a Custom Shop PG in Billy Gibbons specs, you find some different varieties (covered, black, zebra, reliced). You have decide, whether they are worth the extra money. There are rave reviews from lewguitar.

lew has/had them both and it seemed there was a significant difference between the production and cs varietys. if you are going cs, you can ask them for whatever you want. a 9.4k antiquity wind humbucker with a full strength magnet is a fantastic pup!

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I do like PG+ actually. In fact I have two. Some people said it's excessively bright while I find it tonally balanced with warm Phat Cat neck in my alder body/all maple T-style guitar. In my LP, it's slightly brighter. Go figure.

Maybe you should try PG+ or PG with A8 magnet.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I put an Alnico 9 in my PGb. It gotta fatter, hotter, and thicker. It pushed the amp harder too. It also lots of chunky bottom end. It sounded great in my Strat, too much low end in my Epi LP.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I have a PG that I wound at user group day to like 9.1k

I love it. Just a little more rude, a little more rude, a little fatter, but still a PG. Have Mercy!

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I've got an MJ made custom shop pickup in my epiphone LP tribute that is an A5 wound to 12k. I described the 'gimme all your lovin' tone as what I was shooting for. They told me they recommended started with the stock PG as the foundation and they would make what changes they needed to wind it to 12k. It's a beast and it'll never come out of that guitar.

The Custom Shop version of the Pearly Gates isn't really all that much like the standard model. It's overwound ~.5k and most often has 12 slugs, if I recall correctly it also has an RCA5 magnet.

There's also a different Custom Shop PG that spends a good bit of its time in a pickle jar.

...S Deco V...

Now that's a pickup I haven't heard of in a long time. It seems that they took it off the Custom Shop website, a darn shame for sure. I feel if they made it a production pickup it would be more popular, the high price and low number of reviews scared people away from it.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

seems like it, it is the custom shop and all :D the ones ive seen have been a2 and a little overwound compared to the production model but normal screws and slugs

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

PGP+ is basically a variation of 59, it was developed particularly for Lone Star Strats, the guy in charge at fender really wanted a 59, but for what ever reason it could only be a variation of 59 with PGP+ name, my main Axe is slightly modded Lone Star strat. I swapped first for an invader and then for a Fullshred, - love fullshred. I am thinking of hot PG for my build project, Warmoth RR Mahogany flying V with an old Kramer Striker neck. Any clips of S Deco V ??? cant find any ...

I own CS and Standard PG and the CS ones are way better, hotter, fatter, juicier and sound amazing, nothing i've had comes close.
They are definitely worth the extra money

I have to ask then, in a blind listen are they REALLY that different? And if they are, are they really PG's anymore?

Or are we really splitting tonal hairs, and convincing ourselves the extra $200 was worth the extra 1% difference?

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I’ve read a couple of decent reviews of the Pearly Gates with an A8. I don’t know that the output would be drastically increased, but I’d think it’d be a bit thicker and tighter and maybe more modern sounding.
