Hot Pearly Gates ?

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Not really a true Pearly Gates, but the Custom Custom has that hot A2 vibe going. It pairs really well with the Pearly Gates neck. Also if you have a strat style with a Floyd rose the Trembucker custom custom is what I'd go with if you are looking for something fatter and more powerful than a stock Pearly Gates, but retaining that Alnico ii flavor and juice.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Yeah, the PG+ doesn't kick an amp much harder than a standard PGb. The closest I've found to a hot PG, in general feel, if not exactly the tone, was the Screamin' Demon, and, to a certain extent, the S Deco V. They both have a much tighter bottom than a PGb, but they also have some of the upper midrange push and top end sizzle that a PGb does.

The S-Deco is fantastic suggestion! Still one of my favourite pickups of all time. It is not PAF, like the Pearly, but it does have a PAF-ish type eq with a broader midrange. That might be a better rec than overwinding a regular Pearly and swapping mags. As has been mentioned, adding winds to a PAF is pretty noticeable as is a magnet swap.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Sadly, the S-Deco has been taken off the Custom Shop website, so it's gonna become even harder for players to stumble upon them.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Well, there are a lot of models that aren't on the Custom Shop website. So unless it was a pickup made for a specific artist and they requested that no one make them anyomre, or some lawsuit or something prevents them from making it, it can still be ordered.

Thanks! I really dig the S Deco V in my Hamer. Like you said, it's not a PAF exactly, but it's in the ballpark while providing more detail and, in my opinion, a tighter response, if that makes sense.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I have to ask then, in a blind listen are they REALLY that different? And if they are, are they really PG's anymore?

Or are we really splitting tonal hairs, and convincing ourselves the extra $200 was worth the extra 1% difference?

Are you serious ?
Read my post again, they are exactly as i describe

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Not that I have tried one, but I do wonder what an A2 pearly/custom hybrid would be like and how close it comes to a hotter thicker PGB.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Just buy them

Well, I sill would like to hear what I am buying first ...

How do you think it will sound in Mahogany Rhoads V with Maple/Rosewood neck? particularly in respect to tightness of the lows ?

I had an S-Deco in a Jackson soloist I used to own. I can't see it not sounding killer in your Jackson. In any S-Deco I have tried or owned, they have all had a tight low end. Quick response, similar to a Screamin Demon. As for amount of lowend? An S-Deco with alnico 5 magnet sits right between a Custom 5 and Demon. An A2 magnet brings the lowend down a bit and an A8 up closer to Custom 5 levels.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

The custom shop is like the in-n-out burger of pickups - there are more options off the menu than on the published menu. "If you dream it, they can build it."

Exactly my experience as well. I tried the Demon and the S Deco in an old Hamer Special, though. Think of it as a LP Jr double cut with a way better neck joint and a string thru bridge and that's basically what that guitar is.

I see the S Deco as a more refined, sweeter Demon. It kicks a little harder, has a bit more low end, a more complex midrange, and, believe it or not, more detail when clean AND when gained out. Both are tight pickups, but I hear a little more tightness from the Demon and a bit more low end thump from the S Deco V. I've never mag swapped mine.

It'll sound great, BUT if your main concern is tight lows, I'd point you towards a Demon.

This is true, and one people might not get from looking at the Custom Shop website. They can pretty much fabricate anything, as long as it doesn't break trademark laws. Gotta amplify a zither? Hurdy gurdy? Half bass/half guitar pickup? They can build it.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I've always wondered about buying an electromagnetic pickup for a piano from the Custom Shop. It's been a long time dream of mine to take a grand piano, wire it like a Stratocaster, and put a whole bunch of rack effects somewhere above the keys.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

they did make a huge pup so im sure they could if you wanted to pay for it

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

So .... let's say S-Deco-5 11.5k (B), in a Mahogany Rhoads V through a pushed Brit style amp ( my sig below) will it have the Schenker on steroids vibe :-)

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

My S Deco V gets along beautifully with my EL34 powered amps. And 6L6 powered amps. And 12AX7 powered amps. Transistor amps, too.

I really want an animal style double double pickup, especially after a night out
