Hot Pearly Gates ?

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Hmmm ... DCR of JB is 16.4, and I always thought that fullshred was "hotter" .... so what would i need to ask the custom shop to do to A5 43AWG S-Deco to have DCR say of 12.5, just a bit hotter than fullshred that is ...

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

That's a good question. The thing is, the FS may be hitting your preamp harder than a JB becauae of the pickup's voicing and how you eq your rig. I'd ask the Custom Shop how to make a S Deco V hotter without compromising the tight low end and openness that it has. That's quite a tall order, I think.

Just did :-) it is also going to be angled - that always sounded to me a bit more punchy, so maybe it will translate to extra low end tightness to compensate some of it being lost due to extra hotness.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

You might be too young to remember, but angled humbuckers used to be a thing:

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Here is what custom shop got back to me with:

We can make an
overwound S-Deco to your specs. It should have a pretty
tight low end.

You can enter: Alnico 5,
Moderate output, short mounting legs (unless you'd like
long, which a 59 would have), four conductor wiring. wax
potting: Yes.
In the notes, you'll
want to specify the precise DCR numbers that you'd like
as well as 43AWG Plain Enamel wire, similar to S-Deco but
hotter.

BTW--Have you
checked out the Custom 5? It's similar to a 59, wound to
14.1K and has a resonant peak at the same frequency as a
Full Shred. A bit hotter than the 12.5K you're asking
for, but might save a few dollars and the lead time for the
custom make

What do you say gents ?

Thanks!

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

The Custom 5 didn't have the character that my S Deco has. It's not a bad pickup, but it's just kind of bland to me. It'a my least liked of all the Customs.

I would advise not telling a winder what D.C. to wind it to. DC is an artifact of the wind, not a target factor. I would tell them what you want it to sound like and let them work it out. You'll get better results.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Unless I’m mistaken, wasn’t the pickup angled so as to make a standard spaced humbucker work (line up better) with a trem?
So if this pickup is for the purple V build with the angled pickup rout, you would want to order a standard spaced humbucker for that.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

Depends on the actual trem, but in most cases the wider spacing is a better fit even if angled.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

So, what value tone/volume pots for S-Deco should be to get the most brightness and push out of it ?

Thanks.

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I have my S Deco in a '81 Hamer Special paired with an Antiquity (measures around 7.6k). I have a full set of 500k cts pots (volume/volume/tone) with a .047mfd Orange Drop cap and 50's wiring. Bothe pickups have plenty of spank and sparkle in this guitar even with the warmer strings I use on this thing (DR Pure Blues, 10-42).

Re: Hot Pearly Gates ?

I only ever used the S Deco with 500k and orange drops. I haven't used a proper humbucker sized S Deco with 50s wiring, but I imagine it would be fine. I've used a strat rail S Deco with 50s wiring and a PIO cap in a '63 Melody Maker that was just magically. I think the guitar just "had it" tho haha. FWIW, I'll be using 500K pots and PIO caps in 50s wiring for a S Deco p90 humbucker soon. Just waiting for the CS to ship it out.
