Hot Rails at the middle and neck

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

I have a hot rail (Dunc Designed) in a tele. Middle position. I like it. Works nice for rhythm, greta general all around rock sound.

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

Dave Murray of Iron Maiden uses Hot Rails in all 3 positions of his Strats. He uses the neck pickup a lot for solos, and even on cleans (see the intro to Brave New World) he nails a really sweet tone. With the neck pup, the obvious issue would be it being too muddy, which in my experience, it is, but Dave Murray gets an awesome tone out of it. It depends on the amp I guess.

What guitar/amp would you be using?

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

That's cause he's playing a strat (no mud).

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

I'll be putting it in the middle position of my Charvel neckthrough (poplar and maple body, maple neck and rosewood fretboard) I finally nailed its sound with a Duncan distortion on the bridge. The neck have already a HR... wich is ok. Not outstanding but a nice p.u. I was thinking about a Cool Rails but I didn't bump at any on Ebay so far...:fingersx:

HR/CR/HR

<----------------------

The HR sounds good in the neck. I like it.

I prefer the CR in the middle to give more distinct tonal changes between the pups. When I tried the HR in the mid, it sounded too much like the HRb.

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

I'm just the opposite of LesStrat, at least for what I have in my Peavey - cool rails in the neck and hot rails in the middle. But I've played his, so I can personally vouch for both setups, though they were in different guitars. I'd be tempted to say get a cool rails and you can swap that and the hot rails to see which one you like better in which position. That's what I intended on doing with mine, but I liked it too much to try it the other way.

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

I also like the CR/HR option. Position 4(uses both CR and HR) on my switch sounds excellent and I use it for leads. It keeps its clarity and spank through the cool rails and still retains the high output singing sound of the hot rails.

Re: Hot Rails at the middle and neck

I see... and what about the volume betume the CR and HR, is there any noticeable difference between them?

A little bit... though the difference is really in the tone.
