In my experience, I've found that the Invader and heavy, dark wood just doesn't work for that clean, razor sharp tone you would expect-- more like Angus Young with too much drive and mid-- rather muddy (I've heard the results in a mahogany V and my own walnut SG with an ebony fretboard). Maple will give you that edge, but it tends to be a little harsh on the ears. Now, those two woods plus the ebony may balance out the sound.

I find that the Invader works nice in lighter woods (alder, korina...). Great 80's metal tone. The Hot Rail is not as full sounding as the larger Invader, but it has lots of mids and can be very warm, rather like a neck pickup sound with the bite of the bridge.

Hope that helps.

I have used the Invader in an alder Strat. The Rythm tones are great but, the leads are not clear at all. I wouldnt recomend an Invader in any type of wood for leads. If you play alot of power chords and rythms and like very heavy music, This may be your pickup.
