Both are hot when distorted and smooth and rich when clean. The Lil 59 is smoother and much better sounding when clean than the hotrails. The hotrails is a higher output pup making it better for distortion.

Hot rails are my favorite pickup I've tried. The neck hot rail can't be beat for thick, creamy solo tone in a strat. The cleans are also amazing with them too. I can play Phish with them. Don't let anyone tell you it's strictly a metal pickup. I've also found that a bridge and neck hotrail combined (whether they are in the bridge and middle, middle and neck, or bridge and neck) is one of the best clean tones I've ever found. You should check them out.

I've had a hot rails strat bridge and tele bridge. I've also had a little 59 in a couple of teles. If I only got to have one, I'd go for the little 59.

The hot rails is hot and nasty, but the little 59 is more articulate and cleans up better. The little 59 distorts very nicely also.

The cleans of the hot rails suck hard compare to those of the lil '59 imo.... But the distortions of the Hot Rails are just pure destruction.. that rocks

So it'S lil '59 for clean and HR for distortion for me
