Hot Rod Deluxe

Alrighty guys, after reading about it here at SD and playing one EVERY time I go to the music shop, I FINALLY dropped a few bills on a Hot Rod Deluxe. Man this thing is AWESOME!!! I am still trying to dial in the tones for the overdrive and boost channels, but the clean channel is just clear as a bell!!! With the reverb at a hair under 2, this thing sounds almost like the Pro-Reverb with the 50% on!!!!

My MXR Doubleshot sounds AMAZING through this as well. I had actually planned to get rid of it quickly before I purchased this amp. I have the top channel set for some heavy classic rock distortion, and the bottom channel is just a slightly overdriven boost. They both make the tubes in this thing SING!!!!! Best $350 I have ever spent!!!

I have to make a trip back to town tomorrow though..... I have to replace the "no load" tone pot in my strat since I installed a Hot Rails. It doesn't really compliment the effect very welll!!! I also have to pick up my rack tuner to do a new setup. I installed 11's on my strat, so it has a very warm tone with some brass bottoms. The setup is a little sharp in the higher registers, so I need to do the adjustment before tomorrow's gig.....

Wish me luck, and I'll keep ya posted on her first performance. She will be amped with a Beta 58, so she oughta sound real well!!!!!! Also, my wife is actually gonna make this gig, so I will try to get some pics of our stage presence!!!!

Cheers!

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

Very cool amps. The cleans on these are great but I can't say I liked the dirt channels.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

I havent even put an hour of steady time into this amp, but ya know how bad GAS can get.....

What are the tube and speaker recommendations that keep coming around? I wanna start scouting and saving for them. As amazing as this sounds right now, if you guys say the upgrades are worth it, then this must be near to the Holy Grail once the mods are made!!!!

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

40

and i personally like the stock speaker, and use pedals for distortion so i can't say much for that

but

i know the stock is an eminence legend 125, but 50 watts instead of 75, so if you wanna keep the stock tone I'd say just get the real 75 watt version, it won't break up as early

people who go for the more 'classic' fender cleans seem to go for the jensen c12n's

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

Thanks Drew, I'll check into that. As a genral rule, I never get rid of components I replace, so that I can always go back to original.

Any recommendations on tubes. I am definitely going for the definitive clean Fender sound. I have read something about specific JJ tubes, but can't remember which ones. I will do a search of the forum this afternoon to see what I can dig up. Thanks for your time and input guys!

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

those jensens or the celestion blues

I could kick myself, I was offered a tweed blues deville for $250. The thing sounded amazing. It had the blue Jensen speakers too. I had to pass on it. They were only made for 3 years I believe.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

tubes are all preference

i like the stock ones, the only thing i did was put in some higher headroom ones, gt6l6r's i think

they got a lotta bite to them though, amazing cleans with something like a strat

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

I absolutely love the clean channel, but HATE the overdrive channels. They just sound like butt to me. If you're looking for a 60's rock tone, then they're good. But if you're even trying to do classsic rock, good luck.

Re: Hot Rod Deluxe

I just picked up a 2x12 MINT Fender Deville (60Watts) and I had it cranked the other day, my friend, who was operating the controls, was seriously just about deaf for the rest of the night, I took out my earplugs and thought a stick of dynamite had went off. This thing, it's like Mother Teresa clean. It's a 70 pound wonder, especially at $350. Though I'm interested how you can set your channels to where you don't have to move the dials when putting it on distortion or clean or extra distortion. It seems that when I go from clean to distortion I must adjust the dials, what are you doing to dial in these presets between distortion and clean?
