Hot Rod DeVille - video of the tones I'm getting out of it

I just made a little demo, testing out the new video camera. It turns out the video camera doesn't do so well with low light, like in my dungeon, and the audio overdrives a little too easily, but hey, it's a big loud amp.

Basically, I know a lot of folks have been curious about the Fender Hot Rod amplifiers recently, and so I'm sharing this again now. I made the video last week and posted it in an old thread about finding my tone, but I figured it would be beneficial to the group to have it searchable / easy to find.

In this demo, I actually check out the DRIVE channel, and the MORE DRIVE boost. To my surprise, they sound better recorded than they do live.

Video is a $100 SX Telecaster through some pedals (described in the video) and a 1996 Hot Rod DeVille 212 (NOT the 4x10).

Enjoy.

Really dug the just-comp. tone. Very nice. The reflection in your basement kind of washed out the drive tones as they were hitting the mic, making them harder to distinguish. Of course it's a camera mic, so I think you can be pleased with what you're getting.

The way you play the sort of half-travis picking with the pick and right-hand fingers popping through chords and melodies is exactly the kind of tele picking that I really like and have absolutely no aptitude for. I always enjoy someone with a good, deep groove playing in the pocket like that.

Even though you're not gigging now, it's 100% obvious that you've spent lots of time playing with other people. A player who has never left the bedroom player themselves away in ways they're not even aware of.

Nice vid!

Wow man, I am surprised you noticed that! I play with a lot of right hand fingers - I guess it's kind of the hallmark of how I play. I started doing it pretty recently, in the grand scheme - the last 2 years or so. I picked it up after watching this video.

I'm amazed to hear that, as well. I have played in some sort of a band; almost always in the rhythm guitar / support role, for pretty much all of my guitar playing years --- and it has been killing me that I haven't been with a band this past year.

I have always been a kind of "greater good" guitar player --- not focused on melting faces, but more focused on the intangible "damn this band sounds good."

It's for this reason that I love guitarists like Bobby "Raw" Anderson and whoever the hell plays guitar for Gavin DeGraw. They are bigger influences on me than Mayer and Hendrix, because they do that thing that I mentioned earlier --- they go for the greater good, and for some odd reason, that style of subtle but awesome guitar playing REALLY sticks out to me.

I guess that kind of humor is my favorite, too --- not obvious and up-front; but rather, subtle and contextual.

I have never played a 1x15", but I KNOW I love a 2x12"!

The fullness is just so perfect for me, and I really love 2 speaker amps.

I totally dig your 1x15, though - I would love to sit a DeVille 212, a DeVille 410, and your homemade beast in a room together and go around the room with a set of tubes and compare purely on speaker complement

Great video! I always dig the tones you get out of that $100 tele.

What exactly do you mean by this soso? Just curious more than anything.
