Hot rodded Strat HH

Hi all...

I am looking for some help to do the following:

Reconfigure a US start deluxe with a rose wood finger board maple neck to HH pick up configuration; I’m aiming for the same set up a 1999 US Big Apple Strat which had a Pearly Gates Plus in the bridge and a 59 custom in the neck with 5 way switching with the following pickup combinations...

Position 1 - Bridge Humbucker
Position 2 - Two Inner single coils from the neck and bridge humbuckers
Position 3 - Both Humbuckers
Position 4 - Neck single coil
Position 5 - Neck Humbucker

1st question... I thinking of going with a SH-14b in the bridge instead if the SSHPG1B I’m hoping to keep the sound hot but with not too much output and a deeper darker tone do you think the SH-14 is a better choice?

2nd question... Do I need pickups with a 2 or 4 conductor to achieve the switching mentioned above any wiring information would also be massively appreciated...

Thanks!

Re: Hot rodded Strat HH

You need 4 conductor wiring and a super-switch

Re: Hot rodded Strat HH

i did the two pafs in a strat thing. sounded great -but i wired it a bit different to you, but could get those 5 sounds and more fwiw...
just a 3 way switch. 1 volume zand 2 tones with push pull pots for coil taps.
so you get:
neck hb
neck and bridge hb
bridge hb
neck single
neck and bridge single
bridge single
neck hb and single bridge (great for clean rhythm)
bridge hb and single neck.
Anyway, i thought it was cool. there is a diagram on seymours website if you are interested. You can get all the switches, sprague capacitors, pickguard and push pull pots from guitarfetish.
Oh yeah - whatever you end up doing - coil taps etc. need 4 conductor pickups.
If you havent bought the pups yet, and you want to retain a really nice single coil sound when you split then the stag mag is purpose built for the job.

Thanks Grandturk I thought I would need the 4 conductor pickup's alright... 1 question what’s a super-switch?

gibson175 That configuration you mentioned sounds very cool ill check out the Duncan site and see if I can dig up that diagram and consider it... The site you mentioned for the hardware they deliver to Ireland?

I have bought no hardware yet any thoughts on the bridge pickup the SH-14b or the SSHPG1B I’m leaning toward the pearly gates I think I am going to keep it as close to the Big Apple as I can...

For the configuration I mentioned do you know anywhere I could find a wiring diagram?

Thanks you both for the info!

Hey, another guy from Ireland. ****ing awesome, you should stick around.

If you're looking for a good place to order parts from there's hundreds of places to consider but I usually use allparts.uk.com. They're pretty reliable and have competitive enough prices. I think that this is the super-switch that Grand was talking about.

Re: Hot rodded Strat HH

You should be able to figure it out from this diagram. In that picture it only has one push-pull for a coil-split so you'll need to adjust it slightly but it's clear enough.

EDIT: This diagram is for the wiring that Gibson suggested.

I think it was the 4pole superswitch
