Hot Stack for Strat (original) - Tell me about it

I'm curious about the original Hot Stack for Strat... Just looking for experiences, descriptions, etc. Who has had them, still got it/them? What does it sound like?

I think Trevor Rabin used them in his painted Strat that is all over 90125 and Big Generator. He made them sound great.

I don't, but a good friend had them in his #1 strat for years. Very versatile set. They're a bit thicker and smoother than traditional Strat pickups. They sound pretty similar to the more recent Stacks that I've had in my Strat. Close to true-single coils, but with a little humbucker smoothness thrown in.

I've got the STK-S2 Hot Stack for Strat in the center position of the H-S-H you see in my avatar. You said you're looking for the "original" version, and I'm not sure if you mean just the "Hot Stack" (as opposed to SD's other stacks) or maybe there was a different version of the one I have (bought mine new this year) at some point in the past. Still, here's my opinion for what it's worth:

I'm going to agree with SoundAt11's statement about it sounding close to true single coil, but a bit smoother. I have mine hooked up to a series/split/parallel switch, and I like it as series and split, but parallel gets substantially quieter (I'm guessing due to the stacked design). I did tons of mods to this guitar (1985 Westone Spectrum LX), and I can use any of the three pickups alone, or any combination of 2 or all three. I seldom use the Hot Stack by itself (although it has a nice, bright, edgy tone) but usually use it with my bridge pickup (SH-4 JB) when I want that fatter tone that comes from adding the center position. I find that I'm not that crazy about adding the center to my neck pickup (SH-2 Jazz)... it just seems to get muddy. This is especially true if I have them both set to series. If one or the both is set to split, or if the Jazz is set to parallel, the muddiness comes down considerably, but I'm still just not that crazy about the tone. That's probably a matter of opinion, though.

All in all, I like having it... but I still don't use it as much as I use my bridge and neck HB's.
