Hot Stack with basswood

Has anyone ever tried a Hot Stack bridge pickup in a basswood body guitar? I'm wondering how the combination works together.

Re: Hot Stack with basswood

It makes a great neck pickup for basswood. It kind of has a high end that's similar to the Little 59 but that's where the similarities end because it doesn't have a big fat ass like the Little 59 does and it has more mids. It gives nice harmonics in neck position and cuts through. I can't stand neck pickups that get lost in the mix. It doesn't really have a characteristic sound so it's kind of generic, plain vanilla, but it's warm and sounds good. It doesn't really have a woody sound, and it sounds P90'ish to me. I think it's a great pickup to pair with a medium output bridge humbucker like the PATB-1 or JB. In fact, it sounds more like a JB to me than the JB Jr.

Sorry, I forgot there was a pickup of that name. I was thinking of it as a generic term.

Re: Hot Stack with basswood

Thanks guys, I've been looking for info about hot stacks in the neck position

I've got an early maroon hot stack tele bridge and a maroon hot stack strat
and I wanted to try them both in a tele

Because they're both 20k output I thought the hot strat in the neck might
be overpowering, but it's probably worth a try

Anyway, the maroon pickups will look cool in the candy apple red tele with tort guard!

Re: Hot Stack with basswood

I had a Hot Stack bridge in a Tele and my other Tele had a SD Jerry Donohue. The HS being quiet but not anywhere near the output of the JD.

DCR isn't always a good indicator of output. Both HS's in your case would probably work.

I ended up putting a Klein Broadcaster in place of the HS and I'm happy to be back to the good single coil sound.
