Hotplate...can I?

Got an 8ohm Hotplate. Setting the amp on 8 ohms runnning into two 16 ohm cabs. Thats normal.

Can I....run the amp on 8 ohms....into the Hotplate and into ONE 16 ohm cabinet when space is limited onstage?

:dunno:

I was told here that cabs having more ohms than your amp is not good for the life of your tranny. But I will wait for the gurus to wake up.

Re: Hotplate...can I?

Running two 16 ohm cabs in parallel will give you an 8 ohm load - that is indeed normal.

The ohmage ratings of the Hotplates relate to the tone and the bright/deep switches. You CAN use an 8 ohm Hotplate with a single 16 ohm cab but you MUST set your amp's impedance selector to 16 ohms to match the cab. At high attenuation the bright/deep switches may not work so well, but at lower attenuation it should sound fine.

I've used my 16 ohm Hotplate with an 8 ohm cab (amp set to 8 ohms) with no problems. I checked with THD before trying it!

Just make sure your amp's impedance is set to match the cab you're using.

Re: Hotplate...can I?

I thought the Hotplate was the load and the speaker ohms no longer mattered.
I need to adjust what I am doing if this is the case

Re: Hotplate...can I?

FIRST: THD Hotplates ARE impendece sensitive...thats why they sell a 3.2 ohm, 4 ohm, 8, ohm and 16 ohm models...so you'll use them WITH the CORRECT impedence.

SECOND: If you have ANY questions abotu mismatching your hotplate impedence email the guys at THD and get a CORRECT answer from them, reading info on the WWW could cause you to kill an amp if the info happens to be wrong...

This is the best advice. It's what I did before I used my 16 ohm Hotplate with an 8 ohm cab.

Re: Hotplate...can I?

I have spoken to THD more than a couple of times on thse issues.

They said the OHM rating of the HOT PLATE is NOT a must, as they optimize it, that does not mean you have to use a 16 ohm hot plate at 16 ohm etc etc.

You can run 8ohms into a 16ohm Hot Plate into a 16 ohm load. As far as effects on trannies, I have heard many differing opinions, but as far as it being safe to go 8 ohm into 16 ohm load, its fine. People like EVH do it because of the darker/looser, underpowered tone it gives. It will sound less tight than 16 into 16.

Please correct me if I am wrong, and after talking to THD please - no conjecture please. Too many posts always assert answers that I have found to be wrong.

Re: Hotplate...can I?

Here is the response I got from Ed DeGenaro at THD Electronics. I worded the question in a "which would I buy 8 or 16 ohm?"

His response:
You'd get the 8 ohm Hot Plate and run the amp set to 8 ohm regardless of whether you'd use a 8 or 16 ohm load.

Re: Hotplate...can I?

The bottom line is that if you're using a Hot Plate, what Ed says is right.
