HotRails fullsized???

Re: HotRails fullsized???

The tone chart for the Invader is… 7-Bass 8-Mid 4-Treble
The tone chart for the Hotrails is…. 5-Bass 7-Mid 4-Treble
While close in comparison, they sound nothing alike in tone.
I had a Invader before and it was waaaay to muddy sounding to me.
I liked the output but just to bassy. It didn't clean up as nice as the Hotrails either.
The cool thing about the Hotrails is when you turn it down it actually gets fatter and retains it's volume as well.
So far, this is what Seymour has suggested… Blade Humbucker, thin stainless steel blades, small ceramic magnet,
metal bottom plate. SHR-1b Hotrails voicing.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

I'd say Kramer QuadRails. If SD can make you a variation of that without incurring a lawsuit, I say go for it.

It'll be the best money you ever spend.

If you want a quick fix - ebay the QRs.

The other option might be to get a Dimebucker and swap the magnet for one half the thickness of the stock magnet.

They say my pickup will resemble the Dimebucker in looks but not in sound. Part of the reason the Dimebucker is so shrill sounding is because it
has an all plastic casing. Mine will have a metal casing and the Hotrails EQ/voiceing which is much smoother and fat. They say it will sound just
like the Hotrails only a bit wider which I think will be a great compliment to the existing platform.
I am very stoked about this. Seymour is the best.

Sounds pretty good to me, mate. I've just put forward and idea for an 8 string Dime style pickup (different inside so, it' won't be a Dime at all) I am also stoked about this (it'll be custom #4).

Has it got a name..?

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Yeah...Seymour Duncan ..LOL... Hell man, I'm not that important to have my name on anything.
Probably just call it Hotrails Wide.

How have you like all of your customs so far?

Yeah, they're awesome.

I've got: an 8 string Invader - made about 6 months before they became a stock model - with a 21.54k output - https://forum.seymourduncan.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=40546&thumb=1&d=1364488296
a 'Quarter Pound Hot Cat' a hot wound humbucker sized P-90 with Quarter Pound pole pieces - https://forum.seymourduncan.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=51201&thumb=1&d=1392847408
and a '78/'59 Hybrid Model. This one is pretty special. It has the right amount of crunch (even with an A2 magnet) to play death metal and it cleans up beautifully for chorus pedal use.

Others will follow.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Scott Olson is right. The Invader is the full-sized pickup closest to a hot rails.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

maybe an invader with slugs or thick hex screw (like the ones in the full shred) will made it even more similar to the hot rails, or asking to the CS for actually that, using the hex screws and normal screw bobbins just wound at invader specs

ther than that the onely wich is similar in look, (and maybe with a 250k vol and the tone dialed back a little will sound similar) is the dimebucker

as far as the design goes the full size hot rails will look pretty much like a Seymour Slug or an El Diablo

In the el diablo and slug the rails are actually magnets... a hot rails they are jsut blade pole pieces.. a full size hotrail would need to look more like the dimebucker.

Why would you ask for the CS to make you invader bobbins and hex screws hoping it sounds like a hot rail when you can just ask them to make you a pickup that sounds like a hot rail and skip the guess work?

I placed the order today, you are right, it will look like a dime bucker ( I already said that in a previous post) These guys must not be reading my posts.LOL.
After speaking with Seymour, this is not the first time they have made a full-sized hotrails for someone. And all of the reviews have been positive.
I am very excited about this. A lot like the time I designed and had a custom tube amp built for me. YIPPEEEE:arms:

Re: HotRails fullsized???

well I got my CS Hotrails pickup today and wired it up and this is what I get…….WTF?????
here is a picture of the wireing, as straight forward as you can get , red & white wires soldered together,
green and bare to pot ground and black to hot. 1 volume thats it….Why does this sound like ass????
Did I get a defective CS Pickup ? I've never heard anything so terrible in my life.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Red and white are not taped off and are touching what looks like shielding paint to me. If that is the case, you are essentially splitting it.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

it sounds like that because the soldering of the white and red isn't isolated, you need to wrap it with electrical tape, if not, it will make contac with the cavity ground, grounding the lead from one of the coils, in simplier words, if you don't isolate that soldering your pickup will run in split mode instead of full humbucker

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Thanks for chiming in. I have taped back the red and white and still the same results. (The first photo was to show that they are connected together.)
this is frustrating, I've wired several SD pickups this way before and never had this problem.
Should the red and white wires be soldered together??? that is what I did. and taped them back.

Re: HotRails fullsized???

do you have a multimeter?, maybe a bad solder or you just wired the jack backwards (that has happened even to the better of us)

Re: HotRails fullsized???

I didn't mess with the jack wiring from the previous pickup that was installed.
This is about as simple as wiring gets. I guess I'll clip all the wires back and start from scratch.
But I really think this pickup is defective. It could happen…right??

Re: HotRails fullsized???

yep, but that doesn't happens often, specially on a CS p'up, i also had to start from scratch sometimes, just relax and solder

Re: HotRails fullsized???

Clipped all wires back, started from scratch, soldered to a new volume pot, and the same damn thing.
Pulled this one out and wired the old pickup back up and it works just fine. Like I said it doesn't get any
simpler wiring then this, there is no other explanation other than this pickup was wound wrong or is defective in some way.
I officially give up, this thing is going back, to say I'm disappointed is a understatement.
I sure hope the Seymour Duncan Custom Shop will honor a return.
