Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

Hi guys.

I have a couple of H-S-S guitars and I've been using the hotrail in the neck. I chose it because I'm using high output bridge pickups, the distortion and the jb. After playing it for awhile now I find the hotrail a touch muddy.

I was wondering what experience if any people have with the coolrails or lil' 59 and if those pickups would pair up well with the jb or distortion? I woory about a big drop in output?

Also if it helps the guitars are both alder bodies with bolt on necks and I'm using the classic stack in the middle.

Any pearls of wisdom appreciated.

Have you considered the Little 59? It's a nice paf sound.

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

The JB Jr is a great neck shredder that still has a little single coil spank to it.

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

Try giving your neck Hot Rails a series/parallel push pull, and consider using parallel for your non muddy cleans, then pop it back into series for juicy fuzz leads.

Regarding a Cool Rails / lil 59 neck volume balances with the hot bridge, I'd say you'd perceive a 25% drop in output when switching from the bridge to neck.

If you haven't tried a Cool Rails, then you should. It's one of my favorite Duncan pups. Flip it into parallel, and you have a "nicer" Vintage Rails. (IMHO) :)

Cool rails are great, don't be afraid of the quarter pounder either....

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

Lil 59 is pretty nice....and I've got a rails type pickup ( a noname one) which is about the same strength as the coolrails and this is also quite nice.

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

All of the above are good advice (I have hot rails in a couple guitars) if you don't mind trying Dimarzios, the "SDS-1" (essentially half a Super a Distortion) makes a nice neck pup paired with somethin' hot at the bridge.

Hi, what do you mean by "nicer" Vintage Rails? A bit more punch, or output (volume)? I ask this because I have a Vintage Rails in the neck and middle position and to me they sound a bit too thin and I'm still searching for more punch but with a right Rails pickup. Thanks.

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

Anyone ever try the Lil scremin demon in the neck?

Perhaps its just a personal preference, but the Screamin Demon is a medium output while the JB is a high output...would the JB be to much or am I assuming incorrectly?

I love the Hotrails/JB combo...perhaps change the pots 250k/500k?...

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

I did a demo of a Strat with all Little Screamin Demons, they remind me of DiMarzio Choppers. Not quite warm or full enough for distortion, not quite bright enough for cleans. "Jack of all trades, master of none" sort of pickups.

I was just curious because I know it's big brother is really popular on here as a neck pickup

Probably not more punch/ output, cause if it's wired in parallel the output will be less than it is in normal series.

Re: Hotrails vs any other sc sized bucker in the neck?

I went from a Hotrail to a JB jr the JB sounded great and wasn't muddy like the Hotrails.

Well I love both the Screamin Demon and the JB...I am no expert so I didn't know if the high output JB would be too much for the medium output Demon...probably wrong though...
