I went to a guitar store yesterday, and I was this close to walking out with a new Squier Jazzmaster. The thing played great, sounded super loud unplugged, and looked awesome.
But I hesitated for a second. I don't like traditional Fender single coils for the style of music that I play. I like P90's. I like the QP for Tele. But standard vintage-style single coils don't do it for me under tons of gain.
I know, I know. Nobody gets a Jazzmaster to play Metal. And my intention by getting a Jazzmaster would be to broaden my horizons a bit. But I also don't wanna stop being me, y'know?
I'm reading Jazzmaster routes are not deep, and if you wanna get a humbucker in there, you have to route. Is this true? Because I've also seen they make Jazzmaster conversion pickup covers/rings to fit hums in there. I and I'd only want a hum in the bridge, which tend to sit higher off the body anyway. So thoughs here?
Also... I see the Duncan JM QP has the poles sticking out off the bottom of the pickup itself. Would this be an issue fitting it to standard Jazzmaster routes? Would I have to chisel stuff off to get it to fit? I also see the JM QP specs are really different from the Tele QP that I tried and love. Do they even sound remotely similar?
What other options do I have that you know of? Or is attempting what I want on a Jazzmaster is like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole?
Thanks!
