hottest pups for metal tone

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

It could be the 7 string thing is the reason you like them more??? I have always found that with lower tunings or 7's, its a whole nother ball game.

7 string through a fart cannon, that explains things!!! ROTFLMAO!

DIME, DIME, DIME, DIME BUCKER... I may even put one in the neck position. Just kidding... In my opinion, depends on what you will play with this guitar. To play Pantera, no questions. The man himself used it. There's no way to play Dime's riffs with anyother pickup. They all have mid frequency that is VERY hard to cut down. Dimebuckers have that balance of damned good punchy lows and highs FROM HELL (if you know what I mean). DIME, DIME, DIME.

can the dimebucker get some nice clean tones?
No, to me the pickup sounded like nothing but fuzz!!!! Like a big fuzzy buzz saw! It didnt respond to rolling back the volume either very well!

After playing with EMG's for so long, it's as if I have to try harder with passive pickups. They change the way you play, clean up your technique, make you use your fingers more. There's more player going through the signal.

I think Jeff REALLY hit the nail on the head here. It's not so much that passive players have no dynamics in their playing- they just require less because the pickup isn't so ridiculously articulate. Basically in the year or so I've had emgs I've noticed my playing has changed quite a bit to sound good with the pickups. I couldn't stand them for leads before, but now I just really love the feel and response they give. Combine that with the clarity they offer for rhythm and they're very hard pickups to beat for metal. Having said that, I DO NOT think they are suited to all styles. They exert their own flavor on the tone just like any bucker and unfortunately they can't achieve every sound one could possibly want. No pickup does- that's why people own more than one. But god, for metal- especially anything remotely modern... you'd be a fool not to at least give them a fair chance.

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

Please guys, careful on how you express yourselves. This is how another argument started with myself & someone else on this thread a few months ago. Since we can't see or hear a person, it's very easy to misunderstand a person's intended meaning.

No one has called anyone else's opinions STUPID yet, but it seems to be going in that direction. This is how s**t gets started.

BTW, James Murphy is amazing. Obituary "cause of death", Disincarnate "dreams of the carrion kind" and Testament "Low"
and "live at the fillmore" albums are a great source of inspiration for me. Just thought I mention that, thank you!

One of my warlocks I bought, I asked the salesman for a screwdriver and a pair of cutters, yanked the dimarzios out right on the spot and left them on the counter, bought the 81/85 emg set and took it home. Awesome tone, I love that set up in that guitar. Did the same with the rest of my warlocks too.

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

im hearing mostly EMGs and the Custom and the Jazz. when i looked on the tone wizard it recommended the Distortion and the JB. wat do u think of those?

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

hav you looked at the duncan invader? i Beleive Kirk Hammet used one in the 80s

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

I say try the EMG's first, then the Custom.

I hate both the JB and DD, as well as the Invader.

Kirk used a DD IIRC, but I know James had an Invader in his old white Gibson V knockoff.

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

I know what a DD is but what's a IIRC?

Not always true. Sometimes a hot pickup can aid the high gain to give you even higher gain! YES!!

That's not rocket science. That's electronics. However, like someone already said, are you sure you only want absolutely insanely high gain? When someone said they just wanted high gain and didn't mention anything else, I had the thought that they were just a newbie, but I could be wrong. ANYWAYS, it's electronics. But if we're going that route, you can always buy an amp with more wattage, if absolutely high gain is the only thing you want. It's still an electronic "equation", really....

Besides, wouldn't this be just a TAD bit limiting in terms of musical styles? :D

Re: hottest pups for metal tone

ok check this out. i want it hot enough for metallica tones. i kno they use EMGs but im still a newbie and my fingers still suck. but i also want some nice clean ones.
