Hottest single coil that still looks like a stock strat

I'd like to keep my strat looking stock but want as close to a full out humbucker tone as I can get from the bridge pickup.

The best I've been able to come up with is Fralin Steel Poles. They say they're almost like a P90. Is there anything fatter sounding?

I don't really like any of the rail pickups I've tried. Both the sound and looks were not appealing. Hot rails, Bardens, Jb jr. etc.. Not my cup of tea.

I really dug the 'lil 59 for tele though. That thing had some balls. I hear the strat version doesn't though. ?? Of course it doesn't look like a traditional strat pickup, which is what this post is about anyhow.

does anyone do pickup that will look like a single coil but sound fatter like a bucker?

Kinman has a stacked strat pup around 9k-10k I think.

Re: Hottest single coil that still looks like a stock strat

check the SSL-3 Hot, a favorite of mine
I just might have a couple clips on my site as well. ;)

Re: Hottest single coil that still looks like a stock strat

yeah, i think part of the reason single-coils sound like single-coils is that whole.....only-having-one-coil thing. If you want a humbucker sound you'll need a humbucker pickup...maybe try putting a stock Strat pickup cover over your new minihumbuckers, with some foil on the inside so the holes still look shiney :D

or i dunno, a quarter pounder, or maybe try wiring your stock Strat single-coils in series, which if I remember correctly **IN THEORY** makes a full-sized humbucker. I think someone did that once on this forum or something? i dunno

dimarzio HS3 ? it's rated 21k resistance.. i think that is considered hot... isnt it?

Re: Hottest single coil that still looks like a stock strat

My favorite that still uses a standard Strat pickup cover is the Lindy Fralin Steel Pole 43. Or the Duncan Twangbanger. Neither sounds like a paf humbucker...there are none that do! Lew

Agree with Lew on the Fralin...Great pickup, does the P90 thing very well, but yet it cleans up and still gives a pretty amazing position 4 tone with the middle pickup...Just an amazing pickup!

I haven't tryed the SSL3,but I trust Curly's ears...If I can find one pretty reasonable,I'd love to try that pickup out....

I'm a big fan of the Twangbanger also...I may still prefer the Twangbanger over the Texas Hot bridge in my H1 strat? I readjusted it so I need to see how it does next band practice, otherwise I'll put the TB back in?

Lew will treat you right on that Fralin SP43...Great pickup..

I guess the problem having a high output single coil it is that you have the noise amplified .

Not really? I don't find that to be the case actually...

Hottest pickup that still looks like a strat that I've tried is the Dimarzio Virtual Vintage Solo. It's way hotter than the HS-3, which, to me, sounds quieter than the APS flats in my strat right now.

That's a very low output pickup. I know it's shocking. The resistance thing can be misleading.

What kind of tone would steel poles give? I tend to like warmer alnico over anything ceramic. So I'm kinda worried about these steel poles.

Yeah it's tricky wording it sometimes. Let me simplify it. Because "single coil" does literally means one coil of course, but it's often used to describe the skinny pickup vs. the double side by side fat looking pickups. :duh:

So that's what I'm looking for. A skinny pickup that sounds like a fat one. and still LOOKS like a skinny vintage one.

Has Duncan did any custom shop stuff like this before. Is it possible?

Re: Hottest single coil that still looks like a stock strat

Yeah it could be stacked noise cancelling or simply a traditional single coil with the hum. I just want to know which is the absolute FATTEST hottest pickup that still looks mild mannered single coily.

good question, maybe the custom shop could be the way to go if you dont mind spending a few extra $$$'s.

it is? how come? i know it's a staggered one where one coil doesnt work as yngwie was in the process and didnt want that humbucker type characteristic to it, but wanted it to be hum canceling (read that either on the dimarzio site or yngwies site.. dont remember anymore actually)

so.. that'd be one bit overwound single strat coil .. makes sense actually =P

lol

i'm not a single coil person.. lol (get a hotrails and stick a picture of a normal single on top of it
