How are Celestion 75s?

I thought I put a post up on this the other day, but cant find it. I was looking in my Avatar 2x12 and it has Celestion 75s in it. (there are couple of letters in there too, but cant recall what the whole model name is) Im not real savvy on speakers, only that it seems greenbacks and vintage 30s are the most popular celestions. Ive only done one speaker change and that was swapping out the stock speaker in my classic 30 for an Eminence Private Jack and that made a huge diff. Im wondering if Im getting the most out of this cab with these 75s in it..?

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

g12t75? Pretty good in closed back cabs for that sucked out 80s metal tone. The standard speaker that came in many marshalls of the 800 and 900 series. sounds quite hollow in open cabs.
then there is the g12h75 creamback which sounds more or less like a g12h30 - which in itself is a bigger magnet greenback. Imagine your private jack but with a bit more punch in the low end and more presence but less sweetness in the top.

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

If they're G12T-75s, they are good for amps with strong mids, such as a 5150, but aren't that great for much else unless you mix them with V30s or something similar. Like mentioned above, they have a very scooped out tone, so unless that's what you're going for, they need something to counteract it.

And it's still the standard speaker for Marshall 4x12s.

This. Play through a Carvin V3 with a cab of 75s and a cab with 30s. Alone, each has their strengths but together they're pretty damn awesome imo.

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

Yes, thats what they are, thank you! Def not creambacks... And they are in a closed back 2x12 cab. currently being hooked up to my splawn qr, so yeah, middy amp.. should I maybe put a vin 30 and a greenback in it??

If you like the way it sounds now, there's no need to change, but if curiosity is getting the better of you try mixing one of the G12T-75s with another speaker before you give up on them altogether. A V30 is a prime candidate, but any speaker with a strong midrange would also work well.

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

People on other boards love to hate this speaker... I personally think it's the sound of 80's rock... I have owned many Marshalls that had them in them including my Silver Jubilee cabinet.. Even my current cabinet has G12T-75s in it.. I like them, I personally hate Vintage 30's, but that's my taste, not anyone else's... BUT, I play distorted crunchy rock, that's what these speakers were made for, I can't actually recommend them for anything else, but they handle my 100 Watt Jubilee and my Les Pauls perfectly.. Now that being said, I've never played a new one that's made in China, but from what I've read, after the typical break in they are fine rock speakers.. Just don't expect creamy blues tones to ooze out of them, they are optimized to handle all the wattage you can throw at them..

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

I like 'em just fine. They like Marshalls and similar amps. Not the smoothest clean sound, and they essentially sound like **** without any wattage being pushed into them, ie. bedroom playing. I'm pretty sure that's why the internet hates them.

T75/V30 is pretty rockin' fo sho.

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

They do sound good and cut through just fine live. I find each 75-T is a little different and sometimes you can get lucky and find one that sounds perfect for the head connected to it. With the right head, they have a nice upper mid growl but can sometimes have a scratchy quality that is hard to get rid of. They are bit thin to record with and I prefer legends or V-30s in that situation. I have a pair up for trade if anyone has a pair of speakers that is more to my taste.

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

Because the highs and lows over power the mids so much it can help small 2x12 and 1x12 cabs sound bigger. It is also not a really loud speaker so with Marshalls the amp can be turned up more, compared to say a Vintage 30 or an H30. It makes a quieter alternative to an H30, which is also a bit scooped, since it is not as loud.

Mixing it with a middy speaker is common practice. The V30 is often used, but since the V30 is significantly louder you mostly hear the V30. But the T75 fills in the bottom end and makes for bigger, warmer, sound with V30s. The G12M greenback is middy and closer in loudness but since it is only a 25 watt speaker it may not be suitable as a partner with 75s in cabs when used for many rock playing styles.

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

Are they anything like the 12M-70's?

Nothing is as bad as the M70s :shiver: The T75s were the M70 replacement because so many people hated them.

As for the OP- I liked the 75s when I was a kid. I think they are great for certain metal tones, but overall not a fan. I DO like them with a clean setting for certain things: They have an dark eerie nature about them, but otherwise, I can think of a whole lot of Celestions I would rather have.

Hmm.. both a pro and con.. I have them in a 2x12 cab. So, could be a good thing. Using a Splawn Quickrod, so Marshall vein. But, mixing with a V30 could make it fuller? hmmm.. I love 80s metal, but thats not all Im in to. Plus, I dont get to play very loud much. So, this could go both ways..

Re: How are Celestion 75s?

The G12R75s get a lot of hate on the Internet and I'll admit I used to be a hater but last year things changed...

I was at a local studio to record some demos and the only cab they had was a 75 loaded Marshall cab.

I was against using it but the engineer kept insisting I try it saying over and over how great it was for gritty rock and roll.

I hooked it up just to get him to hush about it...I hit one chord and the tone we all heard was smokin'!!!

I know they are sold as a mostly metal speaker or whatever but here is a 67 ES-335 into a 61/62 Fender Deluxe into that 4x12. The only effects were some boosters (SHO and a Beano) on a few slide over dubs. The rhythm tracks are just guitar amp and cab save for a little Echoplex!

That's also my experience with them. Big thumping bottom end with somewhat nasal sounding mids. Cranking it up smooths all that out a bit.
I personally dig the 65W Celestions a whole lot more.

With a Fender Deluxe I can see them being a good match. I think V30s sound much better with Fenders too.

I'm quite convinced the T-75 will work much better with the Quickrod than the V30s.
