how are g12t-75 speakers?

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

I am of the opinion that the G12T-75 are THE WORST Celestion speakers...they are just very thin sounding to me...decent bottom, razor highs and nothing else...

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

The guy who invented fire makes a good argument, but I use (4) G12T-100s (basically a higher power handling version) below a Marshall cab (oozes mids), and my speakers sound sweeter than virgin sorority poonani! If your amp has decent-sounding mids - and right on, as I see you're an EL34 user - you may find a good metal tone.

Unfortunately +1 ... a major one
I've had mine JCM900 4X12 since 1999 those come stock with those. Christian naild the description. You can do a decent palm mutes but if you go and lead on high E and B strings its root canal/door bell time. You want mine? BTW I grew up on 80s metal and now play more or less modern euro prog/power metal.

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

Everybody hates them but they're probably in more Marshall 4x12's than any other speaker. They are the "JB" of the speaker world, hated but popular..........you figure it out!

I've used them for years....they came with my Marshall 1960 cabs......

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

They are good for 80s "hair stuff" but if wanna do Priest, Sabbath, Purple, Accept, Savatage, Rammstein, it aint it.

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

Thanks, these opinions are what ive heard in other places too. I was wondering as i could get a set pretty cheap but would rather find something useful that something that saves a few bucks.

what eminance or celestion speaker would be good for heavy rock/metal tone? these should be able to handle minimum 100 in a 2x12 cab.

Celestion V30's are the usual quality replacement for the speakers you have.

There's a few bands you mentioned there that have used 75s. :)

Basically I like them. don't LOVE them, but like them for a hrd rock/classic metal tone.. With one big caveat. They sound like @$$ with most modern higher gain amps. And by that I mean anything that has much more gain than a 2203/4.

They were designed with 800s in mind and thats what they sound best with. JMPs. Metal faces and Plexis if you are looking for a bit more metal edge and not clapton or hendrix classic rock sounds.

If you throw them in front of a higher gain modern amp...900...rectumfrier... TSL/DSL they sound like buttocks too cos all of those have alot of grind in the preamp, and there's a "conflict of interest" with the grind of the speaker. It's overkill.

I prefer them over Vintage 30s. I find many people who like V30s are either classic rock type folks looking for something to tighten up a slightly (or wholly) mushy amp..like a plexi type thing. Cos V30s wont quite have that sinister metal edge of a 75, but they are tight. But 800s and JMPs and whatnot IMO sound HORRIBLE with V30s. Again, a "conflict of interest" this time with the high mids.

It's simply a mismatch. And it's just like pickups. A 59 may sound awesome with one guitar and sound like crap with another. Same with a JB or a Full shred or whatever.

.

Like who? I can see how Criss could possibly have used them but he was not using amp's gain, so there would be no miss-match you are talking about with Laney AOR as it was the original High Gain amp.

Priest and Accept both used them during the 80s..and just about everyone else (metal players) once they phased out the 65s.

Actually I think 75s are a GREAT match with old Laneys, thats what I used with my Laney head. I think they help tighten them up and reduce a little of that Laney fizz on top. Though they are a touch too dark perhaps.

after I got rid of my Marshall 4x12 (overkill), I picked up a Laney 2x12 and used that for sev years. My Metalface sounded AWESOME with that cab.

Adrian Smith still uses 75s, FWIW.

Was Balls to the wall 65s cause I really like that tone and dont hear any icepick of 75s. I dont think that Priest used on Painkiller or free wheel burning, I could see how Ram it Down could be 75s. My thing with 75s is that yes its got a lot of agressive bass and but it aint tight - flobby, and the highs are way to ice picky and not enough mids, i.e. very scooped speaker. I really dont enjoy my 75s with my AOR, the ice pick thing drives me nuts. Spina's TS9 gives great power chords and pick harmonics with bass strings but the treble of 75 just makes bends and any kind of run on B and high E strings unbarebly thin and britle. Thats why I am thinking of Swamp Thang.

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

they were too cold for me. gave me the shivers. Even in combination w/ vintage 30s. I am using my G12t-75 loaded cab with an Ampeg bass amp now. (shrug)

you'd like 100+ watts?

if you like warm speaker breakup, a 412 with greenbacks will be 100 watts.

for the best of both worlds, watts and breakup, a 212 with vintage 30s (= 120 watt cab) is closer to the power handling of a 212 with 75s, plus a bit of the greenback breakup character, too. Mesa cabs are great for this.

everyone I know who's tried 50 watt Eminence speakers loves them (VHT cabs). I haven't had the pleasure myself.

may I suggest trying some Genz-Benz cabs? My G-Flex 412 has 75-watters in it, but they don't sound like the G12T-75s at all. Very warm, resonant cabs, superb, tight construction. in combination with a Mesa 212 w/ vintage 30s I am pretty happy.

funny thing about Peavey cabs, maybe it's just me. the 5150/6505 cab has 4 100w Sheffields, if I'm not mistaken. You'd think they'd be easily under-driven, but they sound warm and great with everything I've tried. Yet the XXX cab, also with 4 100w Sheffields = yuck, with every amp i've tried. Might be a good match for a Diezel though. I can daydream, never actually even seen a Diezel in real life, much less play one.

one guy I know achieved perfection (for him) with Eminence 50w and 80w (I think) in an x-pattern.

it's all mad science. no rhyme or reason with gear, it seems to me.

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

i would agree with that, except for the G12m-70's. Those are the worst imo.

I dunno about them being the worst...but they are not my faves! The funny thing is, even though I think they are among the most mediocre sounding of all Celestion 12's, if I compare the G12M-70's to just about any other stock OEM 12" speaker (like the 12's that come in most Fender amps from the 1970's) the G12H-70's still sound much better. I'm not a huge fan of the G12T-75's either...but again, they usually sound better to me than most stock OEM 12's. Celestions are such great guitar speakers that even the mediocre ones sound better than most other "stock" 12's. My favorite 12's of all time remain the Celestion G12H-30's and the Vintage 30's. look at the sig bud:friday:
I was thinking sine i have the gflex 212 that i might pick up the tribal series cad with eminence private jacks in it. Might give some more character to everything.

Hi Lew. Yes thats true, although IMO Eminence now makes such fine speakers that theres really no excuse to use a GT-75 , a G12-m 70 or even a G12L(.. wait!, im seeling four of those G12l's on the trade forum, thay are the best sounding speaker!:14:)

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

I guess I'm the only one who digs em... I like the fact that they're a bit scooped- it makes for an openness that you can't get from v30s. They also let me dial up a fairly thick/saturated tone without it sounding constipated. I only think they're icepicky if you dial in a cold tone or are using a very metallic sounding amp. And hey- I use a rectifier which pretty often gets pegged as just that... so go figure.

Re: how are g12t-75 speakers?

FWIW: Anyone.....If you've got them already, try some Weber Beam Blockers. Or make your own like I did. They'll take away the "ice pick" everyone complains about! They're a fine speaker.......really.
