How are Rocktron pedals in general?

I've only owned one. A Deep Blue Chorus, and it was a decent unit as far as I recall.

But what's the quality of their stuff vs. other pedal makers in the price range? Also how easy, or available are mods for their stuff?

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

I just have a Zombie, but I have also tried their Metal Planet. The Zombie sound more gritty than the Metal Planet, and to me, the Boss Metal Zone has more of a hi-fi sound than the Metal Planet. The one thing I don't like about the Zombie is that it has this heavy chemical/industrial smell, which smells poisonous, and it doesn't seem to have faded since I got the pedal last December. I just try not to breathe when I play through it. Other than that, it is an awesome sound.

I heard the Silver Dragon was the best pedal for making a regular amp sound like a high gain Bogner, and I stress sound "like"!

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

i tried the Silver Dragon- i prefer other tube-laden pedals...

my personal fav Rocktron pedal is the Austin Gold. perhaps the mildest of the overdrive offerings, this pedal lets you have more of what you wanna hear from your amp; limited tonal interference.

other Rocktrons i own:
*Sonic Glory
*Metal Planet

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

rocktron makes fine products. i'd probably prefer them over digitech, but not over boss or line6. their analog products through a tube amp sounds pretty good, but i notice something about their sounds. somehow it's kind of dry to me. it's hard to explain, but it just seems like it does the frazzy stuff really well only it doesn't really nail that smooth liquidy feel. it just feels dry to me. i don't know if anyone else notices this when they play rocktron stuff, but i do.

if that doesn't bother you the you'll like rocktron products. good quality stuff at great prices - except the prophesy @ $900+

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

I'm a strong proponent of the Short Timer delay. I've been inside it, and I think the Rocktron pedals are really well-made for their price. A lot of thought went into the design, to make it easy to manufacture and in turn, keep costs down.

I had a problem with the Short Timers popping when switched out of bypass. I modded mine to reduce the problem. It was a simple fix, and I'm a bit disappointed that Rocktron didn't fix the design before going into production.

Overall, I think they are pretty good pedals, and really good for their price.

I'm with Rich here, he suggested the Short Timer to me and it was a good one, good little pedal, gets the job done and sounds great!

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

I've had the Rocktron Hypnotic Flange, which is an AWESOME pedal with a bunch of different options and have played the Metal Planet, which has an excellent metal/garage rock tone to it.

I've been inside it,

:laugh2:

Ah, Rich, you make me laugh!

Seriously though, I'll find out tomorrow! The pedal got here today but I didn't get back in time to pick it up from the main office of our housing complex! Curses!

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

I'm a BIG fan of Rocktron modulation and delay effects. I just can't stand the sound of a Boss, TC Electronics, Line 6 or Digitec Chorus with the harsh metalic RING they all have . The Rocktrons are liquid and smooth and don't have the hash RING. The $60.00 Rocktron Deep Blue I have sounds better IMO than any of the big money boutique Choruses I have tried .
I currently own both a Deep Blue Chorus and a Vertigo and both sound absolutely FANTASTIC ( although I have to say the Vertigo is a little on the noisy side in the bypass mode ).

Re: How are Rocktron pedals in general?

I have a Short Timer Delay and a Line 6 Echo Park on my Pedal Board. The Rocktron is usually sold for less than HALF the cost of the Echo Park. Guess which one I like the best and use the most?

(Don't say the Line 6 cause you'd be WRONG!)

The Short Timer is a very good sounding pedal; I'm thinking about getting one for my acoustic board.

Good luck in your search.

What does this mod involve? I too have the Short Timer and would like to try it out. I'm guessing the LED current-limiting resistor isn't large enough in value?

The way those PCBs are wedged into the pedal housing makes for one solid pedal...pretty clever design on their part.OTOH it makes for fairly large pedals, which some folks might not like.

PM sent. If anyone else wants to know how to kill the switching pop in a Short Timer, PM me or check out the thread at IndyGuitarist.com where we discussed this. There's a schematic posted there.

P.S. The mod isn't perfect. It doesn't kill the pop the first time you switch it on after power-up. But it seems to take care of all the other pops after that. I big improvement for the cost of one resistor.
