How Are Single Coil sized Stacked humbuckers made?

Is it simply a matter of winding one way a certain number of turns then stopping and then winding in the opposite direction an equal number of turns in the opposite direction?

Is that all there is to it?

Just curious...

Re: How Are Single Coil sized Stacked humbuckers made?

No. There are 2 separate bobbins, one on top of the other. The ones I'm most familiar with (older DiMarzios) have magnets only through the top coil, a sheild between the coils & around the top one, and equal resistance coils (each at about the same resistance as a normal coil, so the wire used is very thin). This gives the whole pup high resistance (15k), but slightly lower than normal output.

But other stacked designs sometimes have magnets through both coils, uneven coil winds, and/or different shield properties.

I had assumed that they still had magnets as pole pieces through both sections of the both coils...but that does make sense to wind separate bobbins and then stack them.

It depends on which noiseless design. Many of the pups in the Dimarzio Virtual Vintage and Area line have between 6 or 7k DC resistance

With snips and snails and puppy dog tails...

...that's what stacks are made of.

JB Jr- side by side coils.

P-100s- stacked coils.

Yup. They have a main coil and then a dummy coil of much less resistance. I think this is how Duncan's new one is (though different yet), and Suhr's add-on humbucking coil has a VERY low resistance. Evolution in pickup design at work...
