How are the Alnico Pro II Strat pups?

I replaced my LP pups with Alnico Pro II humbuckers and like 'em. Now I would like to try Alnico Pro II single coils in my Strat. Anyone use them? I was considering Fralin Vintage Hots, but the Duncans are less expensive and wondered how they compare.

telest,
welcome!

I love 'em!
My favorites of the SD single coils I've tried ...

see my APS strat here:

I have an SSL-3 "Hot" in the bridge, but several folks here like the Twangbanger bridge with those. An SSL-5 or 6 would also work in the bridge - your choice on that, but I'd suggest a bridge pickup that's hotter than the neck and mid

Curly's right on target - APS single coils are great in the neck & middle positions, but I found the bridge pickup was just lame. A lot of people use either a Twangbanger, SSL-3 or SSL-5 in the bridge.

In my APS equipped MIM Strat, I'm using a tapped Quarter Pound with a steel baseplate added - everyone was talking about the Twangbanger but it wasn't available yet. Works for me.

The two fave singlecoils to me is APS-1's and SSL-1's.
They both sounds like they are supposed to, and if your guitar is good, they will sound good.
Just right.

Re: How are the Alnico Pro II Strat pups?

When I first became a Duncan dealer and was putting my first order together I was told to order some APS1's because Jeff Beck was "secretly" using them at the time. Maybe he still does! I tried them and liked them. They were sweeter and less glassy than the alnico 5 SSL-1's I was using at the time. I've had a set of the APS1's, SSL-1's and Fralin Vintage Hots in the same '88 Strat and had a chance to compare them.

The SSL-1's were brightest and I thought closest in tone to the original pickups in my much used '63 Strat. The APS1's were smoother and less glassy and ice picky. The Vintage Hots were in between the two: brighter than the APS1's but smoother and not so ice picky as the 40 year old originals in my '63 or the SSL-1's.

If you opt for the APS1's in the neck and middle, the Twangbanger bridge pickup is probably the one to get...as the guys suggested.

The other set to consider would be the Antiquity Texas Hots...those are also alnico 2, but handwound by either Seymour or MJ in the Duncan Custom Shop. They have great vibe. Many people here on the board feel that those are the best Strat pickups they have ever used.

The Antiquitys are my favorite Duncans...followed closely by the SSL-1!

I don't want to hijack this thread, but it's along the same lines as the topic... I'm thinking about going to original strat 3-single coil setup again for my main strat. I'm playing rock and the stock pups were ok...but I'd like to try the Duncans. Are the APS-2's a good setup for rock...or do I need something with a little more power? I don't like my fat 50's for hard rockin'...too low output, too glassy (Don't get me wrong, I know they weren't made for this, that's why I want a change). So APS's? BTW, I don't like stack pups. Was thinkin' maybe QP's as well?
