How are the Duncan distortions

I'm looking into getting Duncan distortions for my les Paul but I've read very mixed reviews... what are your opinions on them?

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

My opinion is also mixed.

I love the Distortion pup, but not with the ceramic magnet. It is totally awesome with an A8 mag, however. I also love it with the softer feel and tone with an A2 mag in it.

it is distorted. no, really.

check out some of the Mark Day (search Mark Day Guitar) videos on youtube. look for ones with the chlorine (blue) Jackson PC1 guitar. he told me he's using a Distortion in that one. maybe it's the Fractal gear he's using, but he gets a lot of usable tones with that guitar.

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

I put a Distortion in the bridge of my Les Paul Studio and, with 50's wiring and the tone rolled down to 6 (yes 6), it did the best Led Zeppelin IV sound (Black Dog, Rock and Roll) I've ever heard out of any of my guitars. Sorry, that's all I've got. Don't have other extensive experience with the Distortion. It's just a Ceramic JB. Slighty hotter and brighter. IME has a thick buzzy/fuzzy tone when on the edge of Marshall break up, which is a good thing. Mine is an older one, though. A DDJ.

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

THey are high output, bright pickups....great for, you guessed, distortion, and when you need a high gain cutting sound that is compressed enough to keep all of your playing at relatively the same volume. While it does this one thing really really well, you are not going to get a clean jazz tone out of it- so it isn't a versatile pickup. But most people who love them don't count versatility high on their list.

I went through a period of time looking and researching for a pickup for very long, and ended up with an Invader. I almost bought the distortion, but decided to risk it. The distortion is a kickass pickup, and I think it'll sound fantastic in everything. It can do anything from clear and dynamic cleans to heavy and thick crunch.

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

I'm also curious about the Distortions. Specifically, I'm considering getting the neck version. But, I want to know how the Duncan Distortion neck sounds in the bridge of a Strat and whether or not there is a TB version of it. Of course, I would also like to hear about the pickup in the bridge of a Les Paul, too.

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

There isn't a TB version of the neck Distortion unless you go to the Custom Shop. It is a cool idea, though, but it isn't currently made. Contact them to get a price on one.

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

I had an Epiphone Les Paul with the Distortion set. Through a modern high gain amp, great. Through my SF Super Reverb, icepick city.

Re: How are the Duncan distortions

Mark Day is awesome!! I had a Distortion set in an Edwards LP and it was awesome!.. Ive had good results with it in other guitars as well. I would suggest using it in a warmer guitar.. Prolly wouldnt work as well in a maple body axe.
