How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

Re: How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

Depends on the volume.

Its no different to how they play with an amp. But all the greats in the 60's/70's had unpotted humbuckers so thats usually a good sign.

Re: How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

I Seths in an LP Classic and a Supreme, and Ants in another LP Classic. I use Mesa Boogie amps. I play classic rock, blues, country, jazz and pop in a G/B/K/D cover band. I make the Boogies sing, but I typically don't use metal gain levels, nor are we playing really loud.

I also use a slight amount of boost from a DOD FX preamp pedal on my board, and a Boss compressor for a bit of limiting. I use the Boogies' gain channel(s) for crunch and solos--rarely do I use a pedal for gain.

The very few times I have gotten feedback it has been controllable and musical. These pickups are just so organic they're a joy to play.

I'm sure the Custom Shop can do light potting on these, or consider '59s, Pearlys, or the WLH sets.

Good luck.

Bill

Many members have commented over the years about how feedback-resistant Seth's are.

Re: How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

Just had a quick look at the YouTube video for the Seths, which mentions the covers not being potted - does that infer the coils are, and it's just the covers that aren't?

Re: How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

From what I understand, no potting at all. Which, I think, is part of their sound. They should take pedals fine. If you are using super-compressed, modern metal-style gain, I'd worry. I'd worry because you don't have the right pickups for that.

Re: How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

I'm not playing super loud either, so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I'll echo what's basically already been said. The ants. in my case take my Carl Martin Plexitone (bigger version) very well. The feedback that you get from the pickups rarely is "musical and controllable" as Boogie Bill stated.

The ants. are worth their weight in gold. Super "musicial" pickups. There's a certain complexity and 3D nature from the neck pickup that I haven't heard in any SD neck humbucker. The bridge pickup sound great, but the neck p'up is a joy to play. If I would have to pinpoint the source, it'd be the fact that they're unpotted. I credit the ants. for saving my Gibson CS-336 from the chopping block.

I wouldn't worry about it too much if you have a decent wiring setup and components. Obviously make sure your cables and etc are all straight. You should be fine overall.

Re: How are the Seth Lover's and Antiquities with pedals and overdrive?

Thanks for responding. My play varies wiht band but usally Psych-Fuzz-rock, blues, Jam funk type stuff. It doesn't sound like I should have any issues with the TS, Comp, Qtron type stuff. If I run into something with fuzz I can use the 59's. Now i just have to decide between Ants and Seths... :?: I'm leaning toward ANst as they would be further away from the 59's and Seth's to give me a classic sound for Allman's/Luna feel which I enjoy playing.

I prefer Seth's, as do some of the Duncan employees here. For me, Seth's are more 'alive' and articulate. Ant's have a warmer, rounder high end. The great PAF tones from the late 1960's/early 1970's were with PAF's that were still relatively new. Ant's are supposed to sound like those PAF's do now, many decades later, which is a different sound.

I play a set of Seth's in a Dot. It's fan-freaking-tastic with overdrive, even some pretty pushed distortion.
