How bad is the hum in the '59/custom hybrid?

My understanding is that pickups with mismatched coils do not fully cancel hum, but this isn't audible if there's only a little bit of mismatch, about 10%. The mismatch in the 59 custom hybrid is of 4.2K in DCR, which is a 40% difference. Is there then audible hum in this pickup with distorted tones? If there is, does someone have a sound sample available so I can judge for myself if it's too much for my case or not?

I had one installed for a few days. It turned out not to be my thing, but I play high gain and didn’t notice any more (or less) noise with it. I turned my noise gates off to check exactly that, because I read the same thing, and I didn’t notice any appreciable increase in noise.

+ 1 on what Hamerfan and Chris EmCee said...

FWIW, the Custom coil is wound with thinner wire than the coil from the 59. Thinner wire = more resistance - which doesn't mean that turns counts are the same: it just implies that DCR alone is not a reliable indication.

Also and for the record, my notes state 4.5k and 3k for the coils of a Fralin "'Unbucker" (both wound with the same wire gauge in this case, AFAIK): it means that two coils can be mismatched of 33% when it comes to turns count, without losing their ability to cancel the hum - otherwise Fralin wouldn't sell this model. ;-)

Anyway, the Hybrid that I've in a guitar with Two humbuckers doesn't hum more than its neck counterpart with matched coils. :-)

Thank you everyone. I'm now convinced of what I already suspected, that this is not a problem. I'll go ahead and but it.
