How best to setup my rig?

I have the following pedals, which i have collected over the last 10 or so years!

Boss TU2
EV MXR phase 90
353Q Dunlop Wah
Maxon OD9
EHX Mini Muff
Proco Rat
MXR Double shot
MXR Stereo Chorus
Boss DD3 Delay
Boss DS1 (not a big fan of this pedal)
EXH Small Clone Chorus

I also have an Ernie ball volume/fader pedal. I have a Marshall TSL60 and a Fender Hotrod Deluxe. Both amps have FX loops, though only the Marshall's is switchable.

Now my question is, how would you guys set it all up? I sometimes set up both the amps so I am running in stereo, either with the MXR Chorus or Delay, or using the Fader pedal to fade between dirty Marshall and clean Fender. It also lets me switch between both amps or just one. Normally though I just use one amp and run the Delay and Chorus through the effects loop and other pedals in front of amp.

Thanks guys.

Re: How best to setup my rig?

My first step would be to think carefully about whether you really need all those pedals in the chain. Take out the DS1 if you're not a big fan, and consider whether you actually need the OD9, Mini Muff and Rat since you also have distortion options with your amps. In my experience it pays to keep things simple, especially when gigging.

If it were mine, I'd keep the tuner, OD9 and one mod pedal, put the rest of the pedals on the bay, and rock out.:headbang:

Re: How best to setup my rig?

How about this?....

Guitar --> 353Q Dunlop Wah --> EV MXR phase 90 --> dirtbox of choice --> Boss TU2 -- > Amp's preamp --> chorus of choice --> Boss DD3 Delay --> Amp's power amp

Re: How best to setup my rig?

Looks like we share some of the same gear, including the TSL. I think I'm the only one on this forum who is totally pleased with a TSL.

Anyways, you've got 5 distortion pedals listed and 2 types of chorus. I'd really try to narrow it down to only 1 dist pedal and 1 chorus pedal just to keep the chain short.

I'd go:

guitar > tuner > wah > dist > EVH90 > chorus > delay > amp

Try and keep that pedal chain short and simple. Use only what you need and try to maximize the usefulness of each pedal, even if that means tweaking the settings for different songs. It will be easier to use, more reliable, easier to tote around and probably sound alot better.

Re: How best to setup my rig?

i like a complicated rig if it sounds great so here is what i would do (not that you really care)

does your fader pedal give you 100% to both at the mid point? im going to assume it does.

you have the double shot, od9, rat, muff and ds1. i would try them all in front of both amps and see which ones sound best in front of each amp. im going to pretend that the od9 sounds best in front of the fender and the rat sound best in front of the marshall.

then id test to see what chorus sounds good with each amp in the loop and out, for this hypathetical situation we will say the mxr sounds better with the marshall and the clone sounds better with the fender both sound better in the loop.

then id try the other drive pedals in front of these seperate rigs and see what sounds good. for this experiment we will say the double shot kicks ass in this dept and the muff isnt bad but the ds1 sucks. im gonna say you want the delay and phaser on both amps

i would run this:

guitar->wah->tuner->double shot->muff->delay->phase 90-> fader
fader a output->rat->marshall w/chorus
fader b output->od9->fender w/chorus

and let your little sister play with the ds1 as an orange truck or something

Re: How best to setup my rig?

Jeremy,
thats very cool. I should have said I don't use all of this when I practice with my band (when I had one) I just used the TSL with tuner Wah and OD9 to push the drive channels.

I dunno why i mentioned DS1, I never use it. But I have acquired a lot of stuff over the years. I figure though if i pack it away i will never dig it out again. I find, at practice volumes anyway, the OD9 into the muff is very cool. Anyway just checking to see what people with knowledge would do.

Cheers guys

Guitar -> tuner -> wah -> phaser -> amp. Delay in the loop. Sell the rest.

Re: How best to setup my rig?

I think the amount you like the Marshall drive channels will decide how many dirt boxs you need. I use two quite similar ones with a single channel amp and would like two more (a fuzz and an OD) but that may be different if I had a Marshall like amp (as the DS-1 and Pinnacle II are Marshall flavoured). I'd say if you like fuzz keep the Muff as its a sound the Marshall can't get. Also the OD9 may be useful for solo's. Wah is great if you use it. I wouldn't see why u'd need two different choruses unless chorus is a main part of your tone or if you use one dirty and one clean (then I'd have one in the HRD loop and one in the Marshall or whatever). Maybe list the 4 you use the most and why and it will become obvious which one you should use.

Re: How best to setup my rig?

I usually prefer the sound of wah after distortion, to me it sounds smoother. Sometimes I put the wah in the loop, sometimes not...depends how my ears are behaving. If you find you're spending more time setting up and tearing down than playing, some simplification is in order. If you can permanently set up the complicated rig in your practice space or studio, then go that route.
