How 'bout 20 yrs old JB?

I have two guitars both have JB installed on bridge position. One is 2001 Custom Made GMW (H-H) and the other is Hamer Steve Stevens Model (H-S-S) made back in '86. Every time I try both guitars and compares the sounds. I have a feeling that the GMW's JB sounds better, louder and chunkier. There is no doubt that the GMW is more high end guitar, with neck-thru construction and it could be wood, electronics or construcyion involved, but the Hamer Steve Stevens Model is also a fine guitar as far as I know. Recently I'm thinking of replacing Hamer's single coils (also duncans but I'm not sure which model they are) with duncan's high output single sized humbuckers (I'm a long time humcuker fan), such as single sized JB or 59. And there's a few thing comes to mind and here my questions go.

1. Since I feel Hamer's JB on the bridge is weaker than my GMW, is 20 years enough to reduce the magnetics of the pickup? I wonder if the neck and middle p'ups of mini humbuckers could be too much louder than the 20 yrs ol' JB.

2. I'm thinking of SHR-1n or little JB or little 59 for the neck, but I'm not sure which one is right for the middle position. Please feel free to recommend best combo options.

Thanks!

20 years is definately enough time to reduce the magnetic pull of an alnico V magnet. That might be part of the deal there. But, then again, construction/woods/everything else is gonna play a big factor too.

I had a JB that was about 10-15 years old and I sold it to Cory XC. Dumbass move on my part... that thing sounded sweeeeeet.

There are lots if things that could be going on here...what pot values are in the Hamer? The GMW? Caps, wire, etc...Those are the things I would check first. AS fo the single coil sized buckers...what kinds of sounds are you looking for?

Re: How 'bout 20 yrs old JB?

My guess is that the Hamer is using 250k pots, and the other guitar is using 500k pots.

Pot values...hmm...I'm not really a electric tech head so I didn't check. One thing I'm pretty sure is that the GMW has PRS circuit inside. I may have to bring it to the nearest tech for pickup replacing.

As for the sound, I'm trying to set it for pantera type heavy sound or nu metal :)

If it is an original Hamer pot it is 500K.

Dumb question but, raised or lowered the pickup hiegth on the Steve Stevens?

Re: How 'bout 20 yrs old JB?

I Would Go To Your Local Techie And Just Intstall 250k Pots And No Resisters And Maybe A Volume Mod And Experiement
