wow, I totally disagree with steps 2 and 3... although maybe the Peavey amps have something to do with it.
suppress any impulse to be creative and original?? what the hell is up with that?

There's at least a couple on this forum. I spent a lot of time working on his stuff as a kid, but I never bothered with going the extra mile and making sure I had everything down exactly and the tone perfect.
In the end, the extra effort is just time wasted if you're try to figure out what you have to offer.

Get a humbucker equipped guitar, throw a Seymour Duncan custom EVH pickup in there, get something like a Voodoo Amps V-Plex / THD Flexi / Marshall plexi ( Super Lead) / a Splawn amp etc., use a variac to drive it harder and rock out!

An EVH-pup loaded strat with nickel strings into a cranked Marshall 100 watt Plexi into a 4X12 with Celestion G12H-30's. Also, having an MXR Phase 90, MXR Flanger and MXR Analog Delay along with good reverb on a pedal, unit or amp will help a lot. MrHM.

1) part together a load of guitar parts from beater guitars. stick a totally random pickup in the bridge.
2) buy an amp you like the sound of, find a cab you like the sound of. play it loud, and place the microphone anywhere close, really...
do as the man himself did... :laugh2:
you can bet eddie didn't know what 'brown sound' was when he created it, its just luck hehe - its a cranked EL34 based amp, and a humbucker. everything else was pretty much circumstantial IMO...

Maybe it's just me, but I didn't think that the 5150 amp was anywhere near Eddies original sound. My Brother had one and it jsut sounded like a LOT of gain and noise to me. In contrast, I have a HIGHLY moded DSL50 and between that and my own personal attack on the strings was able to clome closer to the Early VH sound not that I really wanted to copy it though.
I have not listened to much new VH at all , but is Eddies soiund consistant with what it used to be? I personally also think that some of that sound comes from the downtuneing and once he got with Sammy they started tuneing up.

Even though I love the "brown sound" I never tried to copy it... however that DID kick off a fascination with British distortion sounds.
Oh yes and for the record the Seymour Duncan EVH is shorthand for Evenly Voiced Harmonics and is not associated with any particular artist.

Maybe so, but that's so condescending. Finding your favourite guitarist's tone can be a starting point to finding your own tone! Lots of artists were inspired by another, so that's why I think the statement about the "Brown Sound" from VHT is stupid.

maybe so, but thats a very expensive way to start out
i just bought a guitar i liked the sound of, then bought a couple pedals i liked the sound of, then bought an amp i liked the sound of, then tweaked them so they all sounded amazing (to me) together

There's two sides to this. You're right, the quote is condescending, but:
-Yes, it can be beneficial for (especially young) players to cop a tone as they are learning about all aspects of playing. I also think that if you're a hobbyist (or in a VH cover band), there's nothing wrong with obsessing over the brown sound. If it makes you happy, I say go for it!
But in the end, it'll take a lot of time that you could have used trying to get your own sound. That's a judgement you have to make. Music moves forward through innovators, not copyists. Not everyone can be as original as Ed, but the more people who strive, the more guitar playing opens up and is enriched as an artform.
