How Can I Have G.A.S. For A Marshall When I Love My Amps?

Marshall JVM 50 watt combo. Ooh my my what an amp. I played the 100watter a while with someone at the store who owns the amp. He demoed it for me showing me several variations of tone. I didn't think Marshall had it in them after the whole DSL and MG deals.

I was surprised with the clean settings. You can get crystal clean Marshall tone! No s*** for real! Channel 2 is where it's at. That is classic Marshall tone. 100w is waaaaay too much. I can't imagine cranking up a 50w all the way at the average venue.

If you own one please tell me more about them.

I was debating on getting the 50 watt JVM, but in the head version. Also was looking at the Engl Fireball as well. I play in a larger room, maybe 3 times the size of my bedroom..and plan on doing small jam sessions. Did you see the new prices of the JVM410? Crazy!

Yes no s***! They are listing the 50w combos for over $1800! The cool thing is that I am starting to see those new Marshall Vintage Modern heads going for $999. I don't know if it is wise to invest in a KT66 head though. That probably sounds very ignorant and admittedly I only know how they sound and that they hardly make them any more.

I have to wonder because VHT heads use those tubes so they cannot be that scarce can they?

Re: How Can I Have G.A.S. For A Marshall When I Love My Amps?

I'm seeing more heads being equipped with the kt66. Is that a new trend now? The Vintage Moderns are pretty nice, but I'm afraid it won't have enough gain for my playing, but I can tweak it to suit me. BTW..pm'd you more on the kv2.

i love all of my gear...doesn't mean i wouldn't love an Orange, a V, a Les Paul, three telecasters, a Stingray, an EB-0, two Ampeg SVTs with matching 8x10's, and a custom ELECTRIC AMPS head with purple tolex and a green 6x12 cabinet.

and i could be wrong, but i'm pretty sure Jimi Hendrix had one of his Marshalls modded to use KT66's back in the day. either him or Zakk Wylde. Or maybe it was Peter Frampton......

well, SOMEbody famous once put KT66's in their marshalls...i remember that much for sure...

Is this sarcasm? The old Marshalls (EC on the Bluesbreakers, for example) used KT66's and Zakk has got 6L6's in his Marshalls, same as the Mesas for example.

Re: How Can I Have G.A.S. For A Marshall When I Love My Amps?

The prices you guys pay for new Marshalls in the states are pretty high. Every market has it's weirdnesses when it comes to import amps, though. The UK really gets it in the arse with Mesa, for example...

But I'd look s/h if you absolutely must have that logo. Personally if I lived stateside, I'd look at Splawn or something similar, particularly if roadworthiness is a concern. Marshalls have suffered greatly from 'design via accounts dept' in recent years...

Re: How Can I Have G.A.S. For A Marshall When I Love My Amps?

Too bad that waited a year to come out with those 50 watt versions. I know a few that got the 100 watter but can't really let the horse run. For me, they have too many knobs. I like the Vintage Modern much more than the JVM but I like the JCM 900 MkIII Master Volumes better than both of them.

And Zakk Wylde's amps have 6550's in them. Not KT66's or 6L6's.

Yeah, we pay out the nose for Marshalls over here. That's where the used market comes in for me. I've never bought a brand new tube amp ever. All used. I traded for a new one before - stupidly - but won't do that again unless I know the thing is built like a brick sht house.

They do have a lot of knobs but it is very simple to operate. Plus it has his memory feature so you don't actually have to use the knobs too much. Each channel you switch to remembers the settings. Everything from EQ to reverb. 100w is too much.

Re: How Can I Have G.A.S. For A Marshall When I Love My Amps?

The KT66 was the original Marshall power tube. The EL34 was the next best alternative they turned to when the original supply of NOS KT66 tubes started becoming too expensive. There are several sources of re-issue KT66 tubes around now though. If the re-issue KT66 supply drys up, then it's back to the EL34, or a 6L6.

Yes, Hendrix's amps through at least the early part of his fame had the KT66, not the EL34. The first 100 watt production runs came before Marshall switched from the KT66 to the EL34. The same probably applies to EC amps with Cream.

Marshalls got more expensive here in the states because of the weak US dollar compared to the exchange value of British or European currency.

I'm more interested in the JVM now.......thanks.....

Still too many knobs for my taste. I like my amps simple. Heck, even the Vox AD50VT I use now is simple. It is a cool amp though, no doubt. My band's other guitarist has one and he gets some great tones out of it.

No it's called 'ignorance' hahahah with just a dash of 'apathy' cuz i'm not really a big fan of Zakk Wylde nor do i care what tubes Jimi was using, and i'd bet five bucks that he didn't either :smokin:

i've been a little curious about those vintage modern heads m'self.

I played one several times when I was trying to find an amp to replace my beloved Deville. I really like the amp but what turned away was that I prefer having separate gain channels and EQs on my amp. There is enough gain on that amp and probably more than people think but it will not do metal. Rock yes, metal no.

I do not think the cleans sound a lot like a Marshall. Maybe better than the rest. Great solid amp to buy. I still look at them from time to time.

Well, it's VintageToneModernFeatures; master volume, footswitchable reverb and effects loop (bypassable)
