How close is an HB-101 to USA 59's?

I've got a wiring scheme that I want to try out that 59's would be perfect for. But I hate to lay out the money for a pair just for this experiment. I have a pair of HB-101's though. So, how close are they tonally?

Cool. I'll give 'em a try. ;)

Edit: Then again, if anyone had a pair of 59's they wanted to let go of cheap-ish, I'd be interested. (Must be 4-wire.)

Iron Gear makes the Rolling Mill which is a 59 clone that sells for £30 a set. I don't know how that translates to real money, though.

I've actually loved every "Duncan Designed" pup I've tried. I wish they sold more of them retail.

Re: How close is an HB-101 to USA 59's?

normal 59's are two cond so might as well use the hb101's if they are four wire

For those who haven't tried, the HB-101s sound even more like 59s when you remove the writing. ;)

This made me snort, thank you :-)
Are Duncan Designed pickups all made in one factory, or several? Also, are any of them sold under other brand names? My fiancée has an Ibanez Destroyer (low-level model) from years ago that I'm going to rewire with new pickups, pots, etc, and she bought a pair of Humbuckers for it, but she bought them off eBay purely because they had green pearl stickers on the bobbins...

Anyway, given that it's a Destroyer, and she loves Kiss and Maiden, I was going to try to get hold of something in the ballpark of a JB or SD, but didn't see the point of splashing out on the real deal. HB-102 sets seem hard to come by, and an Iron Gear Dirty Torque/ Blues Engine is probably more money than is worth spending on a guitar for someone who is primarily as bassist. So any knowledge of HB-102s sold under other brand names would be great.

Thanks.

Duncan Designed and Duncan/Ibanez are the only ones I know of. Every one I've ever tried did its job just fine.

You want a DiMarzio DP100 in the bridge and you can find them used for ~$50 at any time but that's for another topic.

As the OP of this thread, I guess I can offer up that I have an HB-102 set, with gold covers, that I'd let go for a very reasonable price. PM me for details or questions.

How much cheaper do you want? ~$40 for a new set that sounds almost exactly like the 59/JB set is pretty cheap.

Unfortunately, the ones I see on eBay are over £40 per pickup including shipping, whereas I can get a JB/ Jazz set for around £100 :-(

Re: How close is an HB-101 to USA 59's?

I'd rather have ArtieToo's set over the Hot Rodded set, though I'm not in the market for either. ;)

As of a couple of years ago, they were all produced by a Korean company called Woosung Chorus, or WSC for short. WSC built them in two of their factories, one in Incheon, Korea and the other in Tianjin, China. They've been sold under the names Duncan Designed, Duncan / Ibanez, Duncan Performer, Duncan Solar and at one point they were going to be branded as Duncan X and sold at retail in emerging markets, but that project was never completed.

For those who haven't tried, the HB-101s sound even more like 59s when you remove the writing. ;)

So, so true.

Interesting, you can get them at Axetech for £60 new.

I was talking about the Duncan Designed, but thank you. Yeah, Dirty Torque and Blues Engine are £70 at the moment, I'd like to find something either with a JB or a Super Distortion flavour to it, plus a neck pickup for maybe £40-ish. I know I'm asking a lot, but I figured that Some Duncan Designed under a different name might be available.

Evan, that info is great, thanks.

The Dirty Torque is JB inspired and I think the Blues Engine is an original wind. I can't confirm that though.

Hey Artie,

The DD black and green are opposite SD's. Keep that in mind if you choose to use DDs to experiment with your wiring scheme.
