The DD black and green are opposite SD's. Keep that in mind if you choose to use DDs to experiment with your wiring scheme.

I've only owned a couple DD pups, but I've been as happy and impressed by them as I have with the SD counterpart.

Really close, I had them in my DX10d for three years without problems, I changed them to a JB and 59 about a year and a half ago, a little bit of difference but not much

The Duncan Designed pickups I have experience with are good, but side-by-side the DC ratings between pickups that are supposed to be "the same" are pretty different. My DD JB/Jazz things sound pretty diff. from the real thing though are in the ballpark. Same with the Jazzmaster pickup supposed to be modeled on the "Hot" model, less output/more brightness that you can hear, and like 12k vs 15k. On purpose, or quality control issues?

Some are different by design with the HB-112 being one of the most obvious examples. This is not the case with the 59 set.

Hi all,

I found this thread when looking for info on the HB–101 and trying to identify whether they came 2-conductor-wired or 4-wire per factory? Mine are in a Greg Bennett semi and I'd like to have them modded to allow for coil tapping/splitting. Does anyone of you here know whether that's possible per the preinstalled ones or do I have to get a replacement set?
Also, I found this diagram and it suggests they might be 4-wires per factory....?

I think the issue you'll have is that OEM's can spec the DD pickups a variety of ways, IIRC. The sure way would be to pull a P/U and physically check the lead, though that's a pain in a semi.

If your reply is about my question, then thanks. In that case I best contacted the guitar tech who had already rewired the pots, he might remember.. And yes, it is/was a pain, which is the reason I shied away from doing the mod myself. Thanks, appreciate it!

Same with me, but then again, as larryguitar mentioned, OEM's could be different.

I'm thinking about coil tap and/or parallel combination of the PU coils and get to control that via e.g. one of the Freeway Switch multifunction switches. I remember that I loved the combination of single coils or parallel coils on a semi a friend let me use and play for some time. I now own a Greg Bennett designed semi from Samick and love its tone and playability. And having this additional feature available on it would make it perfect for me. Since I'm quite pleased with the sound of the built-in Duncan designed HB-101s, I'd hate to swap them out for something else without knowing whether the balanced tone would be there as well.

I've also toyed with swapping USA 59's into my Daisy Rock. But the DD's sound so good, I haven't bothered with it yet. The HB-101's are a perfect match for that guitar. (I think they were what originally came in that guitar, even though mine had something else.)

Good tone is good tone, however you get there. Hard to remember that sometimes when talking about gear.

I agree, no need to 'upgrade' if the best it will be is a sideways step. Appreciate the good tone you have and turn attention elsewhere.
