How come I've never heard of A4 Customs?

Everything imaginable has been done in the custom family, A2, A3, A5, A8, Ceramic, Double Ceramic, replacing a coil with one from a '59 and all the aforementioned magnets. But I've yet to hear of anyone to have a Custom with an A4, it seems like it would be a popular choice for a neck humbucker to match a different Custom in the bridge. A4 has even been used in the 59/C, but never in a normal Custom. I honestly think an underwound A4 Custom could be made a production model neck match for the entire Custom family. Why hasn't this been done?

Because you haven't been around for long and obviously you didn't do your due diligence. From 2006 to 2010, there must be at least a hundred mag-swapping threads where the C4 is cited. That changed when the UOA5 made its intruduction to the Forum and became the magnet du jour, and was rapidly adopted by the leading mag-swappers and the C4 was not cited anymore, although it sounded great before, so it sounds great also today. It's just not so much in the "public eye" so to speak. The A4 kept its leading position as a neck magnet.

An underwound Custom has existed for a long time: it's called the Screaming Demon, and even though it's sold as a bridge p'up, it's been used as neck p'up for many players.

The Duncan Co. never had an A4 stock p'up before the SNS. All p'ups were either A5 or A2. They pretty much still are, for that matter.
