Re: How D'Addario makes strings

As I've stated before, Buzz Feiten (the man) says D'Addario has the best intonation of all string makers, but your string rust may vary.

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

IME, they're just ok strings - every set I've played, the tone dies in a matter of days. Can't beat 'em for cost efficiency though...

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

hmmm....been a while.....used to use Dean Markley's before Elixirs though - IME, they held their tone longer than anything else (Regular or Blue Steel, they were both good). S.I.T.'s were ok but IMHO, weren't any better than any of the others...

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

Yep, for whatever reason Dean Markley's seem to have an edge for me when it comes to lasting longer tonewise.

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

Neat video. As for D'Addario, I've used them and I like them, but they aren't my favorites. I've been using DR for several years now but I think I may purchase a couple different string packs just to mix it up. I will say that D'Addario strings were very consistent when I used them. The DRs I love can be a little inconsistent.

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

Cool video, I too was surprised how labor intensive it is.

I like D'Addario strings a lot. By accident I got a set of "Jazz/Extra Lights" which are 10's that are flatwound and put them on a Strat and it was Dick Dale city... had a lot of fun playing Pipeline and some of the other old surf tunes. On a Strat, they have a sound all their own.

I keep one Strat strung with those all the time. Try them out, I was really surprised as the old flatwounds we had in the 60's were dead when they were still in the package! (Another part of that 60's tone... flatwounds)

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

BS. :lmao:

If you've had great experience with them, great, I'm glad you're happy and hope that it will continue...you apparently overlooked that I prefaced my statement with IME (In My Experience). Maybe their QC has changed and/or improved recently, maybe I got several crappy sets of their strings in succession, I dunno, but, once again, IME, their tone died within days, or more precisely, about a week. Maybe they're more consistent and better quality now, I couldn't say as I don't use them. Nothing wrong with that, remember: YMMV...

I'm not trying to be harsh, but to call BS on someone's experience just because it's diff. from yours is just plain ignorant of the fact that it can be different for someone else. We all have our preferences and experiences, and that's what a forum is all about - to share and exchange them.

Continue enjoying your strings...

PS: FWIW about D'Addario strings... in my 30+ years of professional musiciaship I've try'em all, them strings... but only one brand always gave me the tone I wanted in every electric guitar I've ever owned, single coil or Humbucking: D'Addario's XL strings.

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

Cool vid and Dad's are great strings from an intonation and tuning standpoint. They always just "work". I LOVE them from that aspect. They a re easy to find, inexpensive and you have tons of options. Nice smooth feel. And they are elastic enough you can usually bump up a guage for even better tone.

Unfortunately I absolutely *HATE* the tone of them on the majority of guitars I put them on.

Exceptions: very bright/thin sounding guitars or pickups that have alot of top end: Anything with a trem and long scale, or Duncans. I can see why strat/superstrat/tele guys would like them tonally. On my "normal" guitars (short scales-mahogany bodies..Dimarzio or Gibbo pickups) they sound like a muddy dark mess with a nasty fizz on top.

FWIW, Ernie Balls are built on D'Addarios old string machines.

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

Love D'addarios! My favorite strings out of all the ones I've tried. I loved elixer's I tried but I just can't justify spending that much...coated or not.

Re: How D'Addario makes strings

Yup. D'addarios have been my staple too. They last forever and keep sounding great IME, even on my Les Paul... maybe I like a nice "muddy dark mess with a nasty fizz on top" :)
