how did they come up with standard tuning?

after playing half a step down for a year already i tuned up and realized that the guitar resonated alot better and got a more defined, tighter tone. I think im going to stay with standard for now, but how did they arrive at standard?

I also think that this is a good question.

I have been searching on the Internet and I have found that the path to a modern standard tuning has more to do with the need to adopt a common tuning by the time when instrumental ensembles were growing in popularity, than with some kind of discovery of magic properties of the current standard tuning. In fact, the actual standard at 440Hz has come somehow by confusion.
