How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

Looks like most people started off with an electric. I went with a Ibanez PF series acoustic electric at the local music store. This was only less than 2 years ago. I had always wanted to play and my roomate for college was a guitar teacher and would give me lessons for free. I mostly went on his advice and got a pretty nice guitar. Since then I have been guitar crazy and bought two electrics, amp and all kinds of other stuff.

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

I got a squier strat because at my budget it was either the strat or the tele, and i thought the strat looked the better idea at the time because of the extra pickup

I took it to my first guitar lesson and my guitar teacher said if you're serious about getting good get an acoustic practise on that, and we'll do the lessons on it too.

So 6 months later i scrounged up enough for one... went and got it and haven't looked back. Its still my most played guitar...

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

First i wanted a strat, simply because i had rented one from my school for the first 1/2 a year, after this i was sure i wanted to play guitar, and so went out willing to spend a fair amount on something decent. I went into the 2 decent local shops and looked around, knowing not loads, but enough to know what was good and was wasnt. First shop had a few nice-ish guitar, that played ok, but nothing outstanding, second shop i went in with my non-guitar playing mate, who instantly went up to a Ibanez RG in a silvery finish with sharktooth inlays that went from silver to a pinkish colour in the light, ''wow, george get that!'', It was more than i wanted to spend, but i also loved the look of it, and when i started to play it i was astounded by the thin neck and low action, this was totally unlike any other guitar i had played up till then (Gibsons, Epi's, Strats), and i instantly fell in love with it. A few years later, an ive played a lot more guitars and purchased a few more guitars, and i can honestly say that its still the best guitar to play that ive ever tried, and thanks to a seymour duncan it also sings like no other, im constantly falling in and out of love with the floyd rose, but there is nothing on the rest of it that i would change.

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

My first guitar I got as a gift. It was a crappy acoustic from the JC Penny catalog. :smack: I still have it, however it not in the best condition

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

My first guitar was a Squier Strat, I didn't get much choice in the matter though, I was only 11 and I was taking lessons at school, I asked my Mum for a guitar for my birthday, being an Eric Clapton fan she got me the Squier (fine choice), and I still have it today, I lent it to a friend, didn't see it for about 3 years until another friend gave it back to me! (yeah, it confused me too).

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

My first was an LP Custom copy by Royce, my guitar teacher recommended it.

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

mmmm...well my first guitar was an alhambra spanish one, it was a gift

and my first electric guitar was an ibanez JS 100 model, so yes, i bought it because of his signature, and its looks, and a certain thought that i should buy an expensive guitar because i woudn't be limited to play better until i went pro or something... well it seems that i was wrong :smack: :laugh2:

[hope the next one (ibanez rgt2020) will be the last...this music business will be the end of me...and i have just started]

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

My first guitar was a crappy Fender acoustic. It cost all of $50 with a cheap laminate top and a bridge that was rising off of the guitar itself. The action on the thing was so high that you couldn't make any real music with it. After slugging it out with that thing, my dad and I went looking for a good electric. My dad picked out my Strat cause he figured I'd like it and he said it played well. Sure enough, he was right.

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

i bought an electric knowing how to play guitar from my classical guitar playing so i got looked for a guitar that felt like it was it.

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

then one day i saw thunderstruck on TV and i absolutely WANTED 'that' guitar.. so i went there with my mom and bought one for 200$ hehe. it was an Epi 310 SG junior. still have it, but now i'm trying to trade it for a DX10D jacky

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

Just went and played heaps and picked one that was affordable and that felt awesome! I wasnt even looking for a jackson soloist type thing, especially not a black one, but when i picked up that ps2 it was just magic and played so nicely...and ill keep it forever!

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

My first was a Yamaha classical guitar. I don't remember much about it, other than the fact that it was made late 70s/early 80s and was handed down to me by my grandmother. I got rid of it long before I knew any better. There are many times that I wish I still had it sitting around.

My first electric was the Ibanez I still have. I bought it because at the time I was interested in metal, and this thing had a 24 fret neck, 3 pickups (two if them were big pickups = pretty cool to someone who doesn't know any better), and a tremolo bridge. Wasn't old enough to apprciate tone and feel. I felt that to play metal, I had to have a guitar like that. Plus, let's not forget, when you're 16 and a reluctant Mom is paying for it, chances are that you'll end up with a $200 guitar.

The ebay description...

lol.

I had been playing for 9 months, so i could go and try it out locally and i liked it enough to get it.

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

Well, it all came down to 3 guitars: one of those newfangled Ovations, a Guild F-50R (because Clapton was in an ad with a maple model), and a Martin D-35. I played them all and chose the Martin.

As was said in the last Indiana Jones movie, "you chose wisely, my son."

But I STILL have G.A.S. for a F-50R!

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

Well when i started i didnt know what was good for the money so i basically got a few recommendations and just bought one that looked cool to me. I still have my first guitar and i think to myself "what the hell was i thinking". I remember my other choice and i cant figure out to this day why i didnt get the other guitar rather than the one i got. lol

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

my first guitar was my grranma's acoustic but i'm not going to o**** that. my first real one i got was based on looks only it looked like hendrix's strat it was a squier affinity wow it sucked

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

After seeing the ballroom scene in Back To The Future I knew I HAD to play guitar. I went to the music store with ma and pa to look around, and after 5 minutes i chose (chose as in, "ooohhh baby I want THAT one!!")a White MIM Fat Strat with a Maple neck... based on looks alone!!! remember this was before I'd had a lesson or anything!

What actually happened was I rented a single-pickup Yamaha knockoff of a Jackson dinky that looked like it was about to fall apart. Most of the paint had been knocked and chipped like someone attacked it with a hammer. I think the hardware was not steel but compressed rust. But I loved it and it was all mine, $30 for 30 days. Plus I got some lessons started

at day 29 of the 30 day rental my folks saw I was serious (practiced guitar lessons for about 5 hours a day for the entire month) and surprised me a few weeks early for my birthday with a Crate GX15 and a red MIM Strat Std. They padi for 1/3rd birthday present and 1/3rd 8th grade graduation present so the remaining 1/3rd I paid off over time with my folks.

I still have that Strat and even though its been mooded heavily its still my first real axe

Re: How did you decide on your FIRST guitar?

My parents bought me my first guitar when I was about 7 - a 1960s jazzbox style german made guitar in mint condition.

The first one I bought for myself from a shop was a Washburn MG74 H-S-H. Liked the look of it in the store, and liked the way it played.

I put a Screamin Demon in the bridge of it later.
