How do I Beef up my amp?

Hey guys I have a JTM 45 Clone, which sounds really good but I don't feel like I have any power behind me. I hope this makes sense. It gets very loud but it lacks that extra oomph. I have a JCM 800 that I'm comparing it to. When I play the 800 you can really feel it but when I play the 45 you can hear it without a problem but like I say it doesn't have that oomph. Anything I can do to give me that oomph?

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

The boys are gonna need a better description than "oomph" to work off of.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

As glassman said, we're going to need a better description than "oomph." However, I have a sneaking suspicion I know what you're talking about, and I'll go out on a limb to say what you're looking for—whether you know it or not—is a treble boost.

I suggest you start with a Rangemaster (or modified RM) clone. Keeley's Time Machine Boost is fantastic. BSM also makes an assortment of excellent boosts. They're circuits that seem simple but very much fill out your tone and add complexity like few other pedals.

If you find the treble boost is not to your liking, check out the Ibanez TS-808 and its variations/clones.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

Not sure if I know how to say what I want. I guess my amp feels kinda wimpy, like I said when playing the JCM 800 I could feel the speakers moving and feel it but with the 45 I can't but it does get loud just can't feel the speakers moving the air.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

are you using a 4x12 with both amps...? or are they combo amps?

My C30 seems to lack some low end thump to it so i added a sealed back 1x12 cab and i get the sound i was looking for... something as easy as that could make all the difference

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

umm... 100 watts will almost always have more OOMPH than a 30W amp.
Bass frequencies take the most energy to move through a speaker, and 100 W is a good bit more energy on tap, so the oomph is sent through the speaker better in the jcm800.

That jtm prolly isn't meant to have the same oomph as the jcm. They're pretty different amps.

I like my night train but when I played the marshall haze 40, I was surprised how crazy it felt when power chords came out. That oomph justs hits you in the gut. It's the el34s there. They can move that bass much better than 2 el84's.

also, since the 30W jtm is gonna be working the power tubes harder to get as loud as the jcm, it's prolly gonna start saturating the power tubes and the rectifier. If there's some power stage compression going on, I could see that smoothing out the dynamics a bit, and then your proportion of punch may be diminishing by then

For both amps I run it through a 2x12 cab loaded with vintage 30's, guitar is Les Paul with a JB in the bridge.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

My JCM 800 is a 50 watt and the 45 is rated at 42 watts, thats what my tech told me.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

How old are the power tubes in your 45?

If by "oomph," you are attempting to describe the low-end push that you can feel in your chest when you play, you may want to think about the power tubes. That low-end girth is one of the first things to fade away in dying tubes.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

The JTM45 has a tube rectifier, no? It's simply a spongier-sounding amp. You might want to try the stiffest rectifier tube you can fit in there, or a no-sag solid-state replacement module.

Have your tech check it out with the SS rectifier in there, though. It will probably make the voltages rise throughout the amp and you need to make sure they're within limits. Might need a re-bias, too.

Or, you could accept that the JTM45 has its own sound, and use it when that sound is what you're looking for. They are wonderful-sounding amps, but not all-purpose.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

Tubes are brand new. The power tubes are GT el34M rating of 7 and the preamp tubes are GT 12ax7 r3. It also has a solid state rectifer in it.

Sounds like you want more low end from your JTM45.

There is an amp builder on the Tele Forum (aka : JohnnyCrash) that has build many, many kit clones and can and has modified many a kit in the past.
He once told me how he got more balls from his JTM45 clone, but i forgot what he did to it.
Might want to ask around there.

Also, i believe you can improve your tone by pairring the JTM45 to a set of Emi Swamp Thangs, bot a more pronounced low end.

"Very powerful, thick and chunky tone. Very touch-sensitive with good sustain. Awesome bottom end."

These speakers will not solve your problem, but imho, is deff a big step in the right direction.

Good Luck

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

A nice ol' tube screamer usually does it for me. keep the tone on the darker side or else it all goes to crap.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

Closed back cab. Playing my little Valve Junior through a 212 open back cab sounds DRASTICALLY different than my BIG oversized closed back 212. The closed back retains the oomph and balls that I like my tone to have.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

Zvex Box of Rock has a low end oomph to it.
I notice that my JTM45 has more bass than my 50 watt Plexi.
I've just discovered Barber pedals... they are Fat!
Depending on the sound you want.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

Are you playing them through the same cab? To me the speakers and cab construction make a load of difference when it comes to bass response and the overall "size" of the sound

This is what I thought as well.

Re: How do I Beef up my amp?

Hey rgreen, if your JTM clone has an fx loop (i know some has), you can always put an MXR 10Band EQ in there, and boost the lows to taste.
