how do i make my SG sound more like a Les Paul?

Re: how do i make my SG sound more like a Les Paul?

i used a 59n/custom setup for a long time and then a pgn/c5 and both worked great in an sg. try the c5, the boosted bottom/pulled back mids/strong top balance well with the inherent mids in the all mahogany

I agree with Jeremy. It's very hard to beat the C5/PGn in an SG. Don't think, just do it. :13:

Sell the SG and buy a LP

well. i had a silverburst les paul and foolishly sold it when i was down to about $37 in the bank. with hindsight, being 20/20, i now realize i should've stopped eating. it's the only gear-related sale i ever really regretted. i sold it to my friends brother with the express rule that if he was gonna sell it, i got first dibs.

fast forward 3 years later, i've been playing an sg ever since and find the playability to be much easier for me.

so my point is trying to get the best of both worlds.

i just bought one of the limited edition silverburst sg's from gibson. according to gibson, they made 180. so if the price ever gets comparable to the les paul, i would probably be tempted to sell the sg and get another '79 les paul. hopefully my old one. now if adam jones would stop going on the cover of guitar world with 47 silverbursts, it'd probably make my aspirations a lot easier.

anyway, back on topic, will the custom 5, make my sg sound scooped?

The rationale behind using an A5 pickup like the '59 or C5 in an SG is that SGs tend to be middy sounding guitars, and the mid-focus of the guitar compliments any perceived mid-scooping of the pickup, leading to a nice fat balanced tone. Which is pretty much what jeremy said. :)

just wanted to make sure i was reading it right :)

wait, if the mid range is so dominating...cant you just EQ?

i mean, have we thought about the other half of his set up... amps/effects?

Re: how do i make my SG sound more like a Les Paul?

i do, but it's not really the same. i mean, yes. i can adjust bass, treble, mids and presence, but at it's source, it's not really voiced the same.

my goal isn't to get an exact lp sound. it's not really possible. my goal is to get my sg voiced as closely as possible to an lp.

i don't even know if that makes sense.

Without reading through every post,do you dislike a LP? Maybe purchase a LP instead? I Own both the SG and a gorgeous Tokai Love Rock! I Play the SG alot more because it's lighter and I have much better high register control for lead playing...When I Play the Love Rock though,I'm greeted with a warmer tone that has more sustain than my SG.
