If you're trying to get rid of the "icepick", A2 is the ticket.

I had APTs in my Koa Tele as stock. They lacked sparkle and spank. The middle position was awesome, but individually they were wanting. I took them out and replaced them with "better" pups.

The AII in the neck is awesome. Altough I prefer a vintage 54. I have this paired with a jery Donahue in the bridge. The JD is my favorite bridge PU in a tele.

The AII is a warm well rounded tone pickup Very articulate, and well balanced. A greta blues/classic rock pickup in a tele, but it could also be well used in Country

My Hwy 1 Tele (2007 model) has A3s, and they are what Fender claims them to be: "Rounder sounding".

Since I am a blues and rock player, I love them. It still sounds like a Tele, but not on the twangy end of the spectrum. Still does the country thing well.

I'm basing my comments on the guess that my A3s are closer to A2s than A5s.

I like the JD through my AC30. Hard to beat a tele and AC30 combination.
