How do The Darkness get their sound?

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

Well they use stock Les Pauls So 498T and 490R. Amps the Rythm guy uses a Plexi and the Lead uses a Mesa Boogie. This comes from an interview with them.

For leads I think he uses a JCM 800 with a pedal. I am sure about the rest

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

Good ol' fashioned Gibson Les Paul into a Marshall. It used to be the norm in the 70's and some of the 80's regular rock-n-roll. Welcome back (although I hate the singing).

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

We first learned that The Darkness were Seymourized in Guitar Player Magazine's January 2004 issue, page 38, where Dan Hawkins says, about his guitar, "I put in Seymour Duncans in it and now it's awesome." Dan has also given us permission to use his name.

We're trying to figure out which pickups Dan put into his axe. Near as we can figure it after talking to his tech, it's an SH-5 Duncan Custom in the bridge and we don't know what in the neck.

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

You can go to Spider's corner on their website.

I am not sure why the tech says this:

"Dan originally used Ernie Ball Super Slinkies but switched to Slinky Top/Heavy Bottoms with the low E on 52, but found that even these heavier gauge strings weren't giving a full enough sound to carry the songs on one guitar. After experimenting with different custom gauges we settled on a custom picked selection of 54, 44, 33, 22, 17, 11 (this is an extremely heavy gauge that most would find very difficult to play with!) Dan chooses Jim Dunlop 73mm nylon picks."

I use slightly lower gauge strings than that and don't have issues with carrying songs and sounding full. Look at the countless guys who use lower gauge strings. Jerry Cantrell for one and Look at him when he was with AIC.....no issues with full tone. Maybe this is a joke above....

I do know Billy Howerdell of APC uses heavy strings though....

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

I used to use heavy strings.. like 12's... but I hated them after awhile.. NO BENDING, you really have to fight with them

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

check tehir web site, but from what i know, justin uses a gibson les paul, either a custom or a gold top reissue, and a mesa boogie duel rectifier into a marhsal ax cab, for his solos he sues a jcm 800 2 x12 combo along with a trubo distortion pedal. For dan he uses gibson les paul standards into some plexi marshal head. For pick ups i think justin uses stock butapperntally dan sues duncans.

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

to get their sound: buy the cheapest, grossest beginners amp & guitar set you can find. fnck up the intonation on the guitar, soak the amp's speaker in water and slash it up really bad. then rearrange all the resistors on the circuit board.

congrads! now you sound at least 1/2 as shitty as them :laugh2:

ok that was not called for. The darkness are really talented and are GOOD guitar players. The man asked for advice on how to get the tone of a band he likes not for you to attack them with pointless insults.

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

The Darkness' tone is actually really good. They're excellent players, too. The thing is, they're really not breaking any new ground.

It's just the same Gibson Les Paul-through-a-Marshall tone that thousands and thousands of rock stars over the years have used. It's not too hard to figure out.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

I said that onces. Then I went back. The light strings felt like toys. Playin on 11-52sa with a wound 3rd

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

I must say that the Darkness' tone is awesome, but I also can't stand the singing.

I also use heavy strings (11-50); I can tolerate 10s but anything lighter bugs the hell outta me.

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

Their guitar work and tone rocks IMO. Singing may not be up your alley but they rock no doubt.

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

I don't know about their guitars and pick-ups, but I do know something about their amps.... they use a very rare, thin kind of Marshall heads :)

Re: How do The Darkness get their sound?

I am sure those heads and cabs are dummies as bands have done. But, I would rather a bande just have what they use up front or some other stage background. But, that us there thing! They are playing it up.

I use 11-14-18-30-42-54.....but am considering a .56
