How do the new Black Winter pickups sound?

Heaven&Hell

Looking at getting a set of black winters for a epiphone sg. How would they react in an SG? My current pickups are a 70s dimarzio super D and a Gibson 57 classic, also have CTS pots.

Metal for life!!

they sound sick man. i have one in my epiphone explorer. after EMG 81, BK painkiller, and miracle man, i decided to keep the black winter in there.

I'll have to move mine over to my SG sometime over the next week or so and bounce this thread once I hear them.

In my Les Paul Studio, they are good, but very flat - not scooped and no mid bump either. Useful, but a unique sound to me, doesn't remind me of other guitars I've heard. But I just put them in and don't have a lot of experience with these yet. Haven't tried them under a full range of higher gain sounds yet.

I could also put my Super D in my SG and compare after that. I'll need time to get to all this.

Beau is right about the Black Winters having a flat response. In a 24.75" mahogany guitar, I would think this would result in a very pleasing tone for metal. You'll be able to get more out of your amp's controls to shape your tone because you won't be fighting any inherent frequency emphasis from the pickups.

Wooly low end and fizzy highs,

The mids are nice though.

???

Tight lows, and a very nice high end IMO. I have to wonder if you just tried them in the wrong guitar as wooly low end sounds really off from my experience with them.

I have them in a limba SG, a Walnut Tele, a Fender showmaster celtic tele, a poplar bodied baritone. Wooly is not a description that makes sense to me. They are a very flat frequency response IMO.

Yeah I had the exact opposite experience too. Its like of like they took the distortion and gave it a bit less mids, more lows (still tight) and took the fizz out of the highs. Great and very articulate pick up.

I also kind of wondered if this was a Distortion set that's been tweaked.
