Sorry ,i can't help as to where you may get one stateside.

For cleaning your heads. some Isopropyl alcohol and some cotton buds.
Dampen a cotton bud with the isopropyl and gently rub/wipe the tape face of the head.Re-wipe it after that with a dry one. you can use it on all metal parts, but don't use it on your "pinch roller"[rubber wheel that keeps the tape in contact with the drive "capstan"]
For cleaning the pinch roller ,dampen a cotton bud with clean water and again rub/wipe the pinch roller. You may need to keep the pinch roller from turning with your other hand and progressively turn it round to get to all the pinch roller surface.Once again finish with a dry cotton bud.

If you can't get Isopropyl, methalated spirits will work, although it is not as clean as Isopropyl.

Yes!

Isopropyl alcohol will EAT rubber!!! Bad bad stuff... Warm soap & water works but I've also used Windex for years & years. You can also find rubber cleaner/conditioner from a place like Markertek supply (google 'em) or any other A/V supply.

As for demagging... it's not something that needs to be done everyday... or even every month. It's also very possible to entirely screw up the heads if you don't use the demagger properly & respect it... Most come with good instructions on respecting the magnetic field... what kind of distance to leave esp. when turning it on & off.

Why do you feel the heads need to be demagged?

I thought its part of regular maint, its working fine though.

A sign of needing a demag can be-"a constant clicking/popping sound when your tape is in motion".:cool2:

Demagging IS a part of regular maintenance but it IMO it falls into the variety of once every 6 months~year or 16 tape changes... whichever comes first. Cleaning heads is an every day thing for big 2" recorders... even many times a day... Not so much on an Echoplex but you still want to clean the heads often...

Q-Tip... 99% alchohol... always move the tip in the same direction, not circular or random... L to R.

Soap & water or windex on any rubber parts in the tape path... make sure to NOT let it drip down the shaft into the gears & motor!!! Bad news...

Check out TapeOp.com for tips & maintenance on analog tape machines & the echoplex. Most of what applies to the care & feeding of a 1/2" or 2" pro-tape machine also applies to the Plex...

When you clean the heads the first couple sweeps will show oxide on the tip... The oxide is bits of worn tape... brown stuff, most times really fine like a powder but sometimes it appears in bigger chunks like a cookie crumb. That's kinda bad... if it occurs often or after a few hours of use, you see those big chunks then something is pretty wrong. Either the tape is old & falling apart, or the tape path & alignment is outta whack and ripping the tape apart. Either is bad!!!

I used to have, maybe even still do have some old bootlegs of Queen & Floyd in the '70s... you could really hear who was & who wasn't changing the tapes and keeping up with the maintence on their Plex... old ones had waaaaaaay less top end in th repeats... extreme treble roll-off. That's cool... just a different sound.

I have a head demagnetizer and I used it when I had a Korg tape echo. To clean the heads I just used alcohol and Q-tips.
