How do you finger tap?

Hi everybody,
:newbie:I'm new here at the forum and also kinda new to playin guitar.
I got my first electric guitar (an Austin Les Paul) about two months ago and I'm teaching myself how to play. I'd say i've made a lot of progress since then by just getting tabs off of the internet and reading books and stuff like that.
Recently i've printed a few tabs that call for finger tapping and palm mutes.
Call me dumb:dunce: or ignorant of whatever, but I really have no idea what that means-:dunno:let alone how to do it.

Any way, is there anybody out there who could help me out and explain how to do this?

THANKS

Re: How do you finger tap?

Place your left hand in an appropriate poistion ( :) ), then, with your right hand, fret a (correct) note as you normally would with your left and make sure you kind of pull off (give it a little pluck) in the action. GOOD LUCK!

Keep trying, it'll come.

Good advice right there

To tap, you literally tap the fretboard, it's just fretting a note with you're right hand. Palm muting on the other hand, is more of a feel thing. While picking, you rest your hand on the strings, close to the bridge. They'll still ring out, but you'll get a more percussive 'chunk' than you would with completely unmuted strings. You can move your hand around and apply more/less pressure to get different muted sounds out of the strings, as well.

Re: How do you finger tap?

Buy Van Halen's DVD, Live Without A Net, and watch Eddie's solo. Good closeups.

Explaining it and looking at pictures is one thing, and gives a good idea of how it's done, but nothing is better than actually watching someone do it. And there is no one better to watch than the master himself.
