How do you get your cleans?

Re: How do you get your cleans?

I get cleans using no effects into the amp. I buy only guitars that sound good clean, so to me it just happens because I meant it that way. That and none of my pickups are over 9k in DC resistance ... :D

Re: How do you get your cleans?

Give a listen to the way Larry Carlton does it. I was tickled to hear how he rides the edge ... just attack ... but I'm betting he's using the guitar volume knob too.

Check out TECH BENCH then TWEAKING TONE ... at this link ...

Cool huh ...

That's cool. There's a good chunk of good info there. Thanks for that. That's kinda what I'm trying to do with the Vox AC30TB model in my amp.

Some surprising replies, some not so surprising (Mike....LOL). Seeing some love for the Twin Reverb.

Thanks to Butch Snyder for posting this Mr335 gem a couple of days ago. :beerchug:

Re: How do you get your cleans?

I'm very happy with the clean channel on my Splawn Quick Rod. No complaints.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

It depends on where I'm playing:

If I'm at home, and can't turn the master volume of my dirty channel up a bit, then I just use the plain old clean channel. If I pick hard enough I get a little tiny bit of grit. Or I can play normally and get a pristine sound.

But if I'm at a band practice or a gig, and I can turn up the master volume a bit, I just use the volume knob on my guitar. Roll it down to about 4 or so, and I get a nice clean sound thats on the verge of breaking up. With my amp its got a Vox-ish flavor to it, but gets more Marshall-y as I turn up.

The preamp gain always stays at 12 o' clock, even at home, which gives me enough dirt to get a nice Paul Kossoff Free tone with my Les Paul but still be able to roll down the volume knob to get a clean sound. I hate changing the channels on my amp, and really only use the actual clean channel if I'm plugging in an acoustic-electric or need a pristine squeaky clean tone.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

For me single coil pickups are a big part of usable cleans, regardless of the type of amp, particularly in a band situation. That bell like chime of a good strat pickup make cleans work for me.

I don't mind just a little amp dirt in my cleans either. I don't really care for ultra clean cleans. I want a clean channel that will get a little dirty pushed, and then it can clean up by backing off a touch on the attack, or on the volume knob. A single channel amp in the Tweed -Marshall family works for this, or a two channel amp with a clean, but a little dirty, "clean channel" is okay.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

Ya know, after seeing that Larry Carlton clip, the first amp that popped in to my mind that does that well that I've had experience with is the Mission Aurora. I still want one, it's just going to be a little while still before that happens. The 18 watter I played through reacted very well to pick attack and sounded so beautiful. There goes the GAS....LOL.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

JSX amp. The cleans are fender like that actually push air and cuts through a mix... Try the combo, add a little chorus and reverb, and you have crystal clean tone. I recorded the intro to Ozzys Killer of Giants w/ the clean tone if you want to hear it.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

My favorite guitarists are the guys who play that rythym/lead at the same time kind of style: Jimi Hendrix and SRV come to mind as two great examples.

That's how I play too and I rarely use pedals and never use channel switching amps. Makes for to abrupt of a change in tone and I like to go from rythym to lead seamlessly.

I do it all with my guitar's volume control and my hands,
and all of my amps are very touch sensitive so I can go from cleanish to more stinging or overdriven tones by turning up the guitar's volume and picking more deeply into the string.

BFahz, not looking for examples or suggestions. Just discussing the methods and going about it.

I'm perfectly content with how I get my cleans. Works for me and I don't have to stand by a little button and wait to hit it to get there. Just roll back the volume, ease up on the attack and I'm there.

Lew mentioned two really great examples, SRV and Jimi. Those two are EXCELLENT examples of varying your attack to go from clean to mean.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

Pick attack... but in general I just keep it dirty, and if the song calls for clean, I keep it dirty, (on my strat.. I actually click in the clean channel if I'm using the Les Paul..) and it still sounds great.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

The PAF's are really low under the strings in my guitar - now I need to turn the gain up higher on the clean channel but that also gives me a wider dynamic range and picking softly is usually enough to completely clean up a crunchy channel. If that's not clean enough, I turn the volume down on the guitar.

Re: How do you get your cleans?

i'm always impressed by the amount of tones a Canadian guitarist named Kim mitchell can get out of a an old 2204 800 head.... he has a few Boss pedals, a Comp, a Blues Driver, and a chorus and Delay... The amp is basicly set for a mild OD.... he said once to me that he kicks in the Comp to clean up the amp sometimes... He uses low output humbuckers so that helps when he changes his attack to clean things up.... But if you could hear and see him play with this simple set up you'd swear he has a channel switching head of some sort... But between those Boss pedals and the amp he gets from sparkle cleans to raging Marshall

Re: How do you get your cleans?

I get my clean sound by running my pedalboard into my 1970s Carlsbro 50-Top 50w head.

It's 1 of the best (imo at least) 'fat' clean amps that I've ever used. It makes a great starting point for the various pedals I use live.

At home, I use a Matamp Minimat 4w 6v6 amp for recording/practising and general use :) It's got a great clean tone, especially when I can crank it up a little :)

Re: How do you get your cleans?

The Lux is WONDERFUL when ran clean. I have never been able to run it above 3 out so I use the ol volume knob rollback a lot too. Now that I have the PUP booster I use it a good bit too. The Lux on 3 with minimal boost from the PUP booster sounds great. It gives it just enough extra volume without hardly any coloration.
