Re: How do you guys prefer to sell your gear?
I've had very limited success selling any of my gear but Craigslist has been the only thing making real sales for my bigger stuff. I've sold a few pickups over ebay that went alright, but I still lost out after all the fees.
However, I traded a guitar I just traded for a week ago, and saw it up on craigslist the next morning, being advertised at twice what it's worth, (almost $100 over new value). New it went for $160. It had maybe $50 worth in upgrades to it. I couldn't sell it on Reverb at $135 (missing the trem arm). The guy is now trying to ask $250 for it without the trem arm, or even a trem arm. I'm gonna flip sh*t if it sells at so much as $200, however I won't be too mad. I traded $60 worth in gear for it+ a gigbag... (And shhh I never gave (nor told) craigslist guy (about) the gigbag). So either way I look at it, I'm still coming out of this okay. Especially since the guitar I traded it for is still worth more (and closer to my needs) than the one I traded.
That all said, I have had a guitar of mine posted there for months, and I keep getting people asking to keep them informed on if it sells because "I'm hoping to have the cash for it next week"
Thankfully none have wasted my time coming to "try" it with no intention to buy.
... For that guitar anyway. Only once in general though.
Had a guy who was gonna make a great trade deal with me over CL, I knew I was getting a slightly lower value guitar as a straight trade, but I wanted that model anyway. I get all ready and set up etc and the guy never shows. Thankfully a few weeks later I got the better end of the trade with another guy for another guitar.
Long story short, selling privately sucks.
Oh and I had a guitar posted on ebay, it got a bid right after being posted, couple days later, like 4 1/2 days before the auction was to end, the bidder emailed to apologize that he couldn't pay if the auction won because of surprise home repairs. I accepted it, with hopes that "hey now nobody else can get it at minimum bid" but nobody else bidded at all. That guitar's been up on reverb, and here, and craigslist, over a long few months, but still no takers. Hopefully it'll finally sell somewhere.
However, my first craigslist sale (an LTD KH-202) went quite well, and I only got talked down $10 by a man with cash in hand, and it was only listed a week.
Still, selling with any hope for any profit at all sucks.
