How do you guys use chorus?

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

Of all the conversations I've had with fellow gear fanatics, nothing divides opinion quite like chorus. Contributors to this thread have shown this and I started to wonder why. I've actually seen friends fall out over whether chorus is the worst thing that ever happened to tone or not. Funny.

Can anyone shed some ligt on this? Why do guitar players get so passionate about chorus?

Hell, I didn't even know that there were people that hated chorus this much :laugh2: .

I like my voodoo lab analog chorus pedal a lot...I don't use it all the time, but its a nice effect every now and then.

I dunno, with me, its "everything has its place". A ring modulator makes your guitar sound like ****, but used correctly it can be a cool effect

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

I use it when I'm trying to vaguely emulate Alex Lifeson's rhythm sound. Not a wobble, closer to a 12-string-ish sound. :beerchug:

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

Can someone please explain how EVH uses his chorus again? What songs are they on.

Which parts?

Rhythm or lead?

Anyone have any idea of his settings?

And most floor chorus effects have very little actual chorus, one measly chip set to do a whole chorus...bah:D

Rid,
Just so I know...you said "most" what are some chorus pedals that do NOT fit into that "most"?

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

I use chorus a lot. I had a Dimension C pedal, but sold it for big $$$ on eBay - it was a great chorus sound, but not my chorus sound. Traded down to a $35 CE-3 and now I'm happy.

I use chorus to get a jangly kinda sound, like the Pretenders. Anyone who thinks chorus will thicken their sound is kidding himself. To my ear, the phase cancellations from chorus thin the sound, but sometimes that's what I want. I mostly use it on clean-to-gritty tones, not on higher gain stuff. Usually with overdrive and gain, I'm looking for sustain; chorus tends to kill sustain and feedback.

Chorus is also good as a non-subtle effect when setup for leslie-ish or very wobbly sounds. Early Midnight Oil is a great example - chorus used as a "noise" effect, with more wobble than note.

Hot Grits is cracking me up on this thread, and I tend to agree with him, but don't forget, he also likes pink paisley teles and has a pink shredstick, so he's as deep into the 80's as anyone! hahaha
Oh really??? :lmao: I didn't know he was in to the glam aspect of it...:laugh2: :laugh2: He's got me beat hands down there...:laugh2:

benjaturner, I don't think it's about being passionate, but more of not letting others who never heard your tone tell you how to sound better based just on that effect. I hope that makes sense.

Rich, a chorus can thicken up your sound IF the chorus is modified to do so but yeah, off the shelf it thins it out.

haha, my 80s cred is VERY strong.

I'm moving on my pink paisley strat (too heavy and toppy), and I've sold my magenta pink HM strat recently, but I guarantee you that I'll foolishly grab another shred stick sometime soon. I can't help myself. I know they sound bad, but I'm prone to crippling bouts of nostalgia...

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

Oh stop being precious elitists.....mixed in about 30% and set not to "wobble" is pretty nice, used in the right context, to my ears....I don't like it on dirty tones though

If you like it, do it......that's how you'll find "your sound"

Never. Not ever. Do I make myself clear?

To all of you, I implore: step away from the chorus. And don't try that EVH trick of using a harmoniser. I'm onto that one too.

You people have ears. Make the right decision. Bin the chorus.

Agreed. :beerchug:

As for me, I bought one for who knows what?.....Everytime I step on it, I remind myself of Andy Summers, so I set it to emulate a Leslie, but I rarely use that sound either. Anyone want to buy one of the best chorus's around??
PM me, if you want to buy a minty clean Fulltone Choralflange. Hot Grits reminded me why I need to sell it.

When I'm in my "Andy Summers mood" I use a Phaser with a Marshall patch and one of my tele's. That's going waay back, though. If you have a chance, there's a recording of a live show in Boston circa 1978/79 where he uses this tone for pretty much the whole show. It's pretty cool. :burnout:

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

Modulation delay. It starts out perfectly clean and then swirls and chimes subtly with every sucessive repeat. The repeats blend in better that way, too, so I can use enough delay to get that 3d sustain thing without totally obliverating myself.

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

Never thought I'd say the following, but I'm with Sid on this one. No chorus is a good chorus.

Re: How do you guys use chorus?

It is good for throwing at the TV. But I do realize that some players can make a chorus sound decent. I'm just not one of them!
