Both and "other", I just use whatever fingers happen to be handy / closest ;)

And I tend to use all 3 "standard" variants: Root and 5th, Root /5th/Octave, or Inverted (essentially a root/4th transposed up a 5th, but who cares) :headbang:

Same here.. index on the root, ring on the 5th, and pinky on the root. I never felt comfortable playing any other way.. always felt sloppy to me.

DAMN RIGHT!! lol

Re: how do you play root 5th (power) chords?

I voted index and ring, but only because I recently learned that's the ORIGINAL power chord... I learned them using the root/5th/octave, and I always thought that was the way to do it... I still swear by that today, because its a little beefier and carries more sound generally.

Index, ring, and pinky. I do this because it feels more stable to me and the notes tend to come out clearer. Plus I can add a vibrato to the 5th and the octave if I wanna.

Me too. It sounds alot better to me when I play them that way.

Re: how do you play root 5th (power) chords?

well... i have freakishly big hands... lots of the time i do power chords with with my index and middle finger... is this strange? lol other times i'll use my index on the root, middle on the 5th, and my ring finger on the octave...

Re: how do you play root 5th (power) chords?

big hands, eh? Try this on for size.... MUAAA HAA AHAAAAAA:

E|----|
B|----|
G|-11-|
D|-9--|
A|-7--|
E|-5--|

A fifth of a fifth of a fifth of a root.
Ok, now that's just nonsense...

Re: how do you play root 5th (power) chords?

Either index and ring (e.g. A on the 6th string and E on the 5th string), or pinky and index (e.g. A on the 6th string and E on the 4th string) ... of course the first example changes to index and pinky for the 3rd and 2nd string, and the second example changes to index and ring for the 4th and 2nd; 3rd and 1st strings.
Sometimes I'll substitute my middle and pinky for the index and ring in the first example, just depends on what I'm doing, and where I'm at, and where I need to go. Of course that's just with root and fifth, normally I'd include the octave at least.

All three, i always play the octave. two notes just arent enough!

i invert them for more evil sounds too.

index and pinkie.. used to use my ring finger in the early days, but then saw hetfield use his pinky and the hero he was for me then, i practiced so much, that i can use only my pinky for the 5th and octave
i think it has given me more range also

Re: how do you play root 5th (power) chords?

Slightly off topic, but...
Its been too long since I studied theory, so I don't remember what this chord is called, but its a new favorite. Its a drop D chord. The fingering would be 3rd fret low E(D), 3rd fret A, 5th fret D. It sounds great mixed in with standard root/fifth voicings.

index and ring, sometimes index and middle (for fun)

Re: how do you play root 5th (power) chords?

index and ring...using the pinkie is, technically wrong...besides, there would be no way to play 'message in a bottle'..hehe

actually it is 'wrong' just because it limits using your pinkie to add a maj 9 or octave to a power chord.
