How do you remember what strings you used?

Do you keep a 'string diary'? Keep old string packaging and write notes on them? Or do you just simply memorize by heart?

It seems everytime I go to buy strings I buy different ones. The only strings I remember buying consistantly was 10 years back, D'addario's. And that's because they were the strings bought through my music teacher. What methods do you guys use?

Re: How do you remember what strings you used?

Until recently I only ever used D'addarios, so it was pretty easy to remember. They're still my 'go to' strings when I get a new guitar or I can't find another brand that work. They're still the strings that work best on my Westone.

Lately I've been trying out different sets and different brands on different instruments to see what works. Once I settle on a set that's a good match for that instrument then I don't really move away from them, so again, it's easy to remember, since they're all different scale lengthes so I use different guages.

D'Addario 10's for my Fenders, D'Addario 10-52 for my drop D Fenders, D'Addario 11's for my Gibsons, D'Addario 12's for my acoustics.

I just memorized them I guess.

How do you know which ones to buy in bulk? How long did it take you find the perfect set?
I'm not picky when it comes to strings. If they sound good and don't break all the time, I'm cool.

I've used (and swore by) Super Slinkys for years (09s). I've had other strings been given as stocking stuffers that I only use when I forget that I need to restring. D'addario, DRs. Elixir has always intrigued me, but I've never been keen on the price I see them at, and I've never seen Boomers in a store to give em a whirl.

I keep a business card sized pad in every guitar case. I date the last string change & the last setup as well as the brand & guage I used. If I did something out of the ordinary I note that as well. I know this sounds anal, but I have 30 guitars & it is impossible for me to remember when I setup a particular guitar last.

Re: How do you remember what strings you used?

I keep the front of the package every time I change strings. I write down the date and which guitar it is. Naturally, I throw the old package front away so that they don't accumulate. (It's disturbing how long some of my guitars go without a string change.)

Re: How do you remember what strings you used?

i use the ernie ball not so slinky(green pack) sets on the 2 epis. then i replace the 56 with a 68. the floyd'd guitars get the heavy top slinky bottom(orange pack) sets.

Re: How do you remember what strings you used?

It's easy, for me. I use Super Slinky (9-42) on everything, except for my Tele. It's strung up with Power Slinkies (11-48), to keep my fingers in shape, when I'm practicing by myself.

I don't worry about writing the date down. That's a bit too OCD, even for ME! I just change them when my ears/fingers tell me to.

+100 I'm the same way. If a guitar isn't feeling or sounding right with a particular set of strings I'll change them.

My two default sets of strings are blue steel 11s and d addario 10.5. I've found these work great in almost any guitar. I really want to try out some dunlop heavy core and markley "vintage" strings. Won't happen til I get all my guitar parts together though. I'm hoping these are as good as they sound on paper.

Re: How do you remember what strings you used?

I've tried to keep a little booklet with dates, but I sometimes forget (as I rarely check that little compartment in the case), so it's been working out so-so.

I give them names, take their pictures and keep the pics in an album.

Some of the older ones have their own Facebook pages. One or two have been known to the police and have had their pics displayed prominently at the Post Office and on various lamp posts around the town.
