Hi,

I've read how to splice and add wire to a humbucker, how would you go aboit replacing the whole wire? how difficult is it to do?

Thanks

i actually just did this 2 days ago...
first of all, you need tape and 4 conductor wire(and solder gear, you know the drill)
take the tape off your 'bucker, and get the 4 leads out. each one shoulde be taped up, and 1 or 2 colors(black/black, white/white, red/white and green/black). just desolder each connection(one at a time so you keep track and in line with the manufacturer's color coding) and reconnect the longer wire. as for the ground wire, you need to unscrew the screw coil, and desolder the old ground wire and solder in the new one. once it's all cooled off, screw the coil back in, tape off each lead wire, and tape the pickup back up. easy as stuff!!

Hi,

I'm very new when it comes to the actual workings of pickups and internals, is tehre any way I can damage the pickup by doing this? Any tips or things you'd reccomend to someone trying this for the first time?

ideally I've tried to find a picture tutorial but can't find one.
Thanks :D

it's possible to damage it, yes. but when you take the tape off, i mean only the black outer cloth tape, and not the clear tape inside covering the coils. when you take out the leads, be careful not to rip them out or burn them. you may want to ask around for soldering tips if your not too confident with your soldering skills.

Hi,

To get to the wires, do I need to take the back/baseplate off by unscrewing the 4 gold screws on the bottom?

Thanks

in my experience, you only need to unscrew the screw coil to get to the ground wire's solder joint. other than that, the leads should all be in a bundle on one side of the pickup.

Hey,

Thanks for all the help. I unwound the black fabric type tape all the way and could see the red and white wires, but no way to get into them.

What do you mean by screw coil too? Sorry I'm not too savvy on these terms :P

Thanks!

screw coil is the one with 6 screws, slug coil is the one with 6 short metal pieces.

Re: How do you replace the 4 conductor wire in humbuckers?

hey,

is there a picture tutorial anywhere on the internet? Or could you take some pictures and label them with what parts I need to remove to get to the solder points?

Thanks

Re: How do you replace the 4 conductor wire in humbuckers?

You can remove the baseplate and get at the wire and then twist them together and solder. It is possible you might break one of the leads for the coil so be careful.

if you look up 'how to make a hybrid custom 59' in the search bar, there's a tutorial on how to make a hybrid, but it also shows the leads.

Re: How do you replace the 4 conductor wire in humbuckers?

Hey,

Okay thanks, I got down to the wires. found the ground wire and the green white and black. But this is the part where i am a total noob. They were just taped together and tucked inbetween the coils? Is that all they need to be?

There was ALSO another black and another white wire that seem to be taped together and on the outside of the second coil?

How do I actually replace the wire? the 4 conductor wire I have is just green, red, white, black and bare. not 2 black, 2 white, red bare and green.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

i'm not sure dude. what brand is your pickup? they all have different color coding.

Re: How do you replace the 4 conductor wire in humbuckers?

It's a duncan Custom Custom...

Could you explain briefly what wires I'm actually desoldering and how I attatch the enw 4 conductor wire to this pickup?

Thanks

Re: How do you replace the 4 conductor wire in humbuckers?

ok it should go something like this(btw the light blue wire is actually the white wire, since it's easier to see against white, also this is a bridge model shown):
bucker.jpg
(thanks hermetico!)
so for the slug coil(top coil in the pic), it's white wire goes to white and it's black wire goes to black, and for the screw coil(bottom) it's white wire goes to red and it's black wire goes to green. all you need to do is desolder the connections in there already made, strip off some of the covering, and twist each of the new wires(black/white/green/red) to the old leads already there(black/white/black/white). once you twist them together, hit them with a little solder, let it cool and tape each one off to keep them from touching eachother(i use electrical tape personally). voila, new longer 4 conductor!

Re: How do you replace the 4 conductor wire in humbuckers?

Done... How can I test this has worked without wiring it in just yet?

What can I test with a meter? Thanks
