How do you set up the screw height in a neck bucker?

I already know the effect on the tone... Low height screws give a warmer tone and higher setting yield to a treblier tone. For the bridge I definetly prefer the "warmer setting" but I am not sure a bout the neck. All this thoughts came when I was setting my 59 neck and I just found pros and cons in both... I loved the tone anyway

Which setting do you preffer?

Set the screws to match the radius of the neck. This will make sure that the distance between each screw and each string is the same. Once you've done that, adjust all six up or down until you have the overall height to your liking. Finally, check to make sure that no string sounds stronger than another. If that happens, adjust the screws one at a time to get an even response across all the string.

I'm sure there are those that will disagree with me, but I set the neck pickup as low as possible, which on a Gibson is level with the top of the retainer ring. You're right, it gives a bit warmer tone (at least to my ears) and isn't quite as boomy.

rspst14 nailed it IMO. There is no magic height - in the end it's your ears. However - there are factory recommended specs that give you a great starting point, wich is 3/16 for the neck of a paul (1/16 for the bridge).

I understand why people say high as possible, it equals hot as possible. However, distance to the string is always a trade off between tone and sustain. The closer they get, the less sustain. The mag field inhibits the vibration of the string. On the other hand, as you get farther away, you start to lose tone.

If you are doing overdrive mostly via the amp I say put it at a decent distance and tweek for your tone prefs/string balance like rspst said.

It's surprising what a half turn difference will make, and it takes some time to really hear all the possible tone changes.

I think only Hellion understood me right!!! (and may be Schecter006Elite) I ment the height of the screws reffering to the top surface of the pickup. If the screws heads are close to the surface the overal tone it's warmer than if they are a bit above.

Any thoughts?
