Re: how do you sing?

I say stick with it Benji, you'll find your way back. I've had to teach myself to sing, albeit as an adult, but I definitely was able to learn and I keep improving with time and practice. In just over a year I was able to get to the point where I can now work up enough courage to get up in front of people with my acoustic and sing. One last tip: record your singing, try signing the same song in different keys, find your range and build your confidence there. Start there and I bet your range will improve with time.

Re: how do you sing?

I'm a senior in high school and this year I've loaded up on music classes. One of those classes is Music Theory. The worst part about Music Theory is the singing part. We have to do this wonderful thing called "Solfege." Solfege is basically singing notes off of sheet music all the while assosciating the written notes with "do, re, mi, fa, etc" And if all that weren't bad enough, we have weekly solfege tests in which each of us individually goes in front of the entire class and sings the sheet music alone without even a measley piano accompaniment. The only good thing with all this is that now, it being 9 weeks into the year, I can sing very well and can read sheet music. It took a while, and at first I couldn't even match pitch, but now I find myself confidently testing the limits of my voice and trying things in different octaves. I must say that learning to sing now reminds me of the good ol' days of learning how to play guitar. It's quite fun to try something else and singing is one thing that everyone has potential to do (and it doesn't cost nearly as much as guitars! :) )

P.S. Good luck with the singing!

Re: how do you sing?

Damn! A mic was my worst nightmare for the first 15 years of guitar playing. But last year, a local band was looking for a Roger Waters performer, and I had quite a similar voice and was singing alone at home and car, so I said to myself "Why not try ?" Ive broke the ice the first evening/audition and I was part of the band instantly. Now my voice has improved ALOT over the past year and my range goes far higher, higher than I ever thought. Still a tad shy however...

Re: how do you sing?

I'm not sure... I never worked a lot on singing before my voice started changing considerably. The quality of my voice is certainly much better than it was a year ago, but most of that has to do with training. I'm a bass now, though, so I feel your pain about those f*cking tenors who took over lead vocals. There are some notes they can hit full voice that I can't in falsetto. Who cares about those squealing pigs anyway, right? Just because they chopped their nuts off doesn't mean you have to.

Re: how do you sing?

Dull... my voice is on the softer, nasal, narrow-range side (I can't sing past the G on the third fret of the high E string wihtout sounding like an old woman being raped by a gorilla :) ), so it's not suitable at all for rock... I have a good ear though so I'm pretty good for back up vocals.

This has always pissed me off because many song ideas I have are simply never developped because my voice is limited and I hate it.

Re: how do you sing?

I just cant simple; as that! I leave it to the rest of the band! I was probably the most "unmusical" person at primary school where we were taught to sing! But i managed to get really involved in guitar :P!
Benji, just believe that your dad will stop annoying you if you can sing! im sure that'll help you progress! ;)
